      <title>THE PROPERTIES AND RECOGNITION OF DELETERIOUS CHERTS WHICH OCCUR IN AGGREGATE USED BY OHIO CONCRETE PRODUCERS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[THE BASIC PROPERTIES OF CHERTS WHCIH OCCUR IN AGGREGATE USED BY OHIO CONCRETE PRODUCERS WERE STUDIED AND THESE PROPERTIES RELATED TO THEIR HARMFUL EFFECTS IN CONCRETE. THE STUDY WILL ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP A METHOD WHICH PERMITS THE FIELD IDENTIFICATION OF BOTH INNOCUOUS AND DELETERIOUS CHERTS. A CLASSIFICATION OF CHERTS BASED ON THEIR PHYSIO- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES INCLUDING SUCH PARAMETERS AS PETROGRAPHY, CHEMICAL NATURE, POROSITY, PERMEABILITY, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, WATER-ABSORPTION AND CRYSTALLINITY WAS DEVELOPED. DETERMINATION IS BEING MADE OF THE EFFECT THAT THE PERCENTAGE OF CHERTS IN THE AGGREGATE HAS ON THE DURABILITY OF CONCRETE BEAMS. THE PROCESS OR PROCESSES INVOLVED IN THE DISINTEGRATION OF CONCRETE WHICH CONTAIN DELETERIOUS CHERTS ARE BEING DETERMINED. NINE CHERTS SAMPLES WERE CHEMICALLY ANALYZED BY GRAVIMETRIC AND SPECTROGRAPHIC ANALYSES AND SOLUBILITY STUDIES CONDUCTED IN ALKALINE SOLUTIONS. THESE CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE RELATED TO TEXTURE WHICH INCLUDES THE SIZE, SHAPE, ARRANGEMENT, SURFACE AREA, FRACTURATION, POROSITY AND PERMEABILITY. PETROGRAPHIC ANALYSES OF CHERT WERE CONDUCTED BY PETROGRAPHIC MICROSCOPY, X-RAY DIFFRACTION STUDIES, ELECTRON MICROSCOPY, AND X-RAY X-RAY RADIOGRAPHY. THE PHYSICAL TESTS BEING CONDUCTED ARE POROSITY, PERMEABILITY, ABSORPTION AND RESORPTION, RESISTANCE TO THERMA/ SHOCK, RESISTANCE TO FREEZING AND THAWING AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH.]]></description>

      <title>CONSTITUTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PAVING ASPHALTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF ANALYSES WITH ASPHALTS OF VARIOUS COMPOSITION AND DERIVATION. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY IS TO DEFINE AND CORRELATE CONSTITUTION AND FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTER OF ASPHALTS IN A MANNER SIGNIFICANT TO THEIR USE IN HIGHWAY PAVEMENTS. FURTHER CONFIRMATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF THREE DISCRETE SOLUBILITY FRACTIONS IN ASPHALTS WAS OBTAINED BY EXTRACTION METHODS AND BY PAPER-PARTITION CHROMATOGRAPHY. PARAFFIN BODIES WERE REVEALED BY MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF THIN FILMS. ASPHALTENE FRACTIONS SHOWED THE PRESENCE OF PARTICULATE MATERIAL BY ELECTRON MICROSCOPY AND ALSO REVEALED INDICATIONS OF PEPTIZED ASPHALTENE BODIES. OILS DIALYZED FROM ASPHALT EXHIBITED FLUORESCENCE, WHEN EXPOSED TO ULTRA VIOLET RADIATION, SIMILAR TO COMPONENTS OF THE OIL FRACTIONS OBTAINED BY EXTRACTION. OVEN TESTS REVEALED INCREASES IN ASPHALTENES AND RESIN FRACTIONS AND ATTENDANT HARDENING OF THE ASPHALT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT PROPER INTERPRETATION OF ASPHALT COMPOSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON ADEQUATE MEANS FOR MEASURING THE FUNDAMENTAL SHEARING CHARACTERISTICS AND OTHER RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE COMPOSITE ASPHALT. /AUTHOR/]]></description>

REMEDIAL ACTION OR A CASH SETTLEMENT WAS MADE BY THE CONTRACTOR. BAND READINGS AND OTHER METHODS OF DETECTION ARE INCLUDED IN THIS ARTICLE FOR DRYING OIL PAINTS, ALKYDS, CATALYZED POLYESTERS, AND COAL TAR AND ASPHALT COATINGS. CHARACTERISTIC BANDS FOR EPOXIES, COAL TAR EPOXIES, AND CATALYZED URETHANES ARE ALSO INCLUDED. THE PRESENT STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO OUTLINE THE BASIC PROPERTIES OF CHERTS THAT OCCUR IN OHIO AGGREGATES AND TO RELATE THESE PROPERTIES TO THEIR HARMFUL EFFECTS IN CONCRETE. EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL ANALYSIS RATHER THAN ROUTINE ENGINEERING TESTS. THE MAJOR ANALYSES WERE OF SOLUBILITY, PETROGRAPHY, AND ELECTRON OPTICAL PROPERTIES. CHERTS ARE TYPED, RELATED TO AGGREGATE TYPES, CORRELATED WITH DURABILITY FACTORS BY TYPE AND CHARACTERISTIC, AND DESCRIBED WITH RESPECT TO ENGINEERING TESTS. CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHERT PROPERTIES FOR CONCRETE AGGREGATES, AMONG THEM THAT A PURE SILICA CHERT IS THE LEAST DELETERIOUS CHOICE FOR CONCRETE AGGREGATE UNLESS IT HAS HIGH POROSIT OR SPONGY MORPHOLOGY. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENGINEERING TESTS AND FURTHER RESEARCH ARE MADE.]]></description>
