      <title>NATIONWIDE PERSONAL TRANSPORTATION STUDY, 1969-1970</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Report no. 1: Automobile Occupancy: The report presents auto occupancy rates by major purposes of the trip, as well as place of residence of principal driver of the auto, day of week, length of trip and by time of day by hour that the trip was started.  Report 2: Annual miles of automobile travel: The report presents the effect of 7 selected variables on auto use expressed in average annual miles/vehicle.  These 7 variables were: number of cars in household, age of auto by year model, cars purchased new or used, annual income of household, occupation of principal driver and place of residence.  Report 3: Seasonal Variations of Automobile Trips and Travel: Seasonal patterns of automobile trips and vehicle-miles of travel are examined within 4 selected parameters: 1. place of residence; 2. purpose; 3. length of trip; 4. day of week trip started. Report 4: transportation characteristics of school children: data on travel patterns to school of students 5-18 years of age in kindergarten-grade 12.  For each grade level, home-to-school travel by various modes of transportation including school bus, public transportation, auto, and bicycle as well as walking is analyzed in terms of distance to school (miles) and time from home-to-school (min). Report 5: Availability of Public Transportation & Shopping Characteristics of SMSA households: Data on the availability of public transportation to main business district of the central city for households located in standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSA).       <description><![CDATA[The goals of this study were: to define the problem and determine the context in which the transportation systems function; to assess the impact on systems and staff in major cities outside the Port Authority region; to analyze possible approaches for Port Authority action to improve conditions at our facilities, including the adoption of model programs, training and legislation; to aid in the development of strategies to be undertaken as part of our mandate to improve the economic and social viability of the region; and to understand the implications of the breakdown of service systems and the impact systems have on one another.  The characteristics of the cities selected for the study included:  large homeless population; extensive mass transit systems; downtown redevelopment; advocacy/not-for-profit groups; and government bodies/task forces for the homeless.]]></description>

      <title>TRAVEL SURVEY SUMMARY FOR THE GREATER TORONTO AREA</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The Transportation Tomorrow Survey represents the demographic characteristics of approximately 1.5 million households, and the travel characteristics of 8.8 million daily trips made in greater Toronto area.  The purpose of this report is to summarize the data according to commonly used geographic boundaries.  The summary tables are in three levels of detail, namely, the entire Greater Toronto Area, each of the 6 regional municipalities, and their respective planning districts.  The report covers both socio-economic and travel characteristics.  In addition to presenting the magnitude of the trips coming into and leaving an area, the summary tables and figures also describe travel characteristics such as travel purpose, start time, travel distance, and travel mode choices.]]></description>

The proposed method uses a second best pricing policy in calculating the optimal level of road user charges.  This method is an improvement over previous work which uses average cost in calculating optimum level of road user charges.  It leads to optimal road use charges in which users pay for the social cost of their road use and, at the came time, ensures an equitable income distribution.]]></description>

      <title>DEMOGRAPHIC, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL FACTORS AFFECTING SUBURBAN CONGESTION</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The objectives of the study were to: identify and measure the effects of social and economic forces on suburban travel demand; determine whether suburbs differ in their travel needs and the forces affecting them; measure the differences in travel characteristics among suburbs; and gather timely travel data in suburban Chicago.  To achieve these objectives, the authors developed a behavioral conceptualization, examined secondary data, and conducted and analyzed a survey of 6.150 residents of two growing and two stable Chicago suburbs.  The results suggest that increasing travel and congestion in suburb settings are related to social and economic forces which will continue to operate for the foreseeable future.  Such forces cannot be influenced directly, but they should be recognized in the development of realistic policies for ameliorating suburban congestion.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper presents a discussion of the methodologies used to produce estimates of the cost of road accidents (or the value of reducing their number), focusing on the major issues of contention, and provides estimates for Australia for the year 1985. The estimates are mainly based on the framework and methodology established by A.S. Atkins in his 1981 report 'The Economic and Social Costs of Road Accidents in Australia'. An important improvement is the inclusion of an, albeit tentative, estimate of the cost associated with the pain and suffering of road accident victims. Costs are presented as average unit costs and total costs, using three alternative methodologies, with a preference stated. Cost estimates are provided by cost category and by the level of injury severity sustained by the victim.]]></description>
