      <description><![CDATA[A key era in the democratization of holiday making has been identified in New Zealand, as in many other countries, in the 1920s and 1930s. Historians have typically linked this phenomenon to the advent of paid annual leave and to the rise of the motor car, although there has been little research into the origins of domestic tourism in New Zealand. It is the contention of this article that the inter-war growth of family holidays was driven not so much by the novelty of private motoring but by an existing form of mass public transport, the railways. By both fostering and capitalizing on rising demand for domestic holiday travel, the state-owned New Zealand Railways (NZR) responded to the challenge of motor competition.]]></description>

      <title>FREIGHT AND PASSENGER DEREGULATION: THE NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS REACT TO A NEW OPERATING ENVIRONMENT</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The New Zealand freight and passenger transport markets have been deregulated for almost two years.  One of the principal objectives the New Zealand government had in deregulating transport was to force performance improvements upon the New Zealand railways through free-market competition.  The New Zealand railways have taken a pro-active approach to dealing with this very new operating environment for their inter-city rail passenger services, rail freight passenger services, inter-city bus services and express parcel services.  A range of actions implemented by the New Zealand railways includes both strategic investments and tactical changes to their cost structure and service profile.  The report explores the ways that deregulation placed pressure on the management of the New Zealand railways.  The resulting changes in approach are summarised through both evaluations of their revised business plans and their performance to date.  The authors conclude that the lessons learnt from this situation are likely to be very similar to the experiences in the deregulated UK bus industry.  The report draws these parallels and forecasts the strategies most likely to succeed in the UK's future deregulated bus industry.  This report is presented in an abridged form.       <title>NEW SUBURBAN ELECTRIC TRAINS FOR WELLINGTON</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Forty-four two-car 1500 volt D.C. trainsets are being purchased by New Zealand Railways for use in the Wellington area. The trains are being built in Hungary by Ganz Mavag Locomotive and Railway Carriage Manufacturers, using electrical equipment from G.E.C. Traction Ltd, England. The two-car set comprises a motor coach and a trailer coach with a semi-permanent coupling between. Up to four sets can be operated in multiple. Control is by camshaft-switched resistances and a novel combination of dynamic and electropneumatic braking is used, with automatic airbrake as backup. Electronic control of wheelspin during acceleration and wheelslide during braking is provided. Body construction is conventional, sheathing being painted weather-resistant steel. Driver-to-control radio communication is being introduced and a combined driver-to-guard telephone system and public address system is provided.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Construction of tunnels in soft sedimentary rocks and colluvium derived from them can pose problems that are only normally encountered in hard rocks or soils.  This was illustrated recently during investigations for the construction of a new 1.3 km, 6 m diameter railway tunnel at Poro-o-tarao.  The various investigations undertaken are reviewed, and the effects on construction of the geomechanical characteristics of the materials encountered are described.]]></description>

      <title>SOME ASPECTS OF THE PROBLEM OF RAIL CORRUGATIONS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Investigations into corrugations on the rails of the New Zealand Government Railways indicate that rail vibration frequencies and accelerations are consistent with formation of corrugations by plastic deformation of the rail metal. X-ray diffraction measurements show that residual stresses of the order of the ultimate compressive stress of the steel are present in the rail head.  Physical measurements show that the wheels appear to follow the corrugation profile into which the wheel profile can fit.  The effect of flash butt welds and very wet conditions are briefly considered.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Detailed information is presented on energy use in New Zealand transport together with international comparisons and historical trends. The term transport energy as used here refers to direct energy use, that is the energy supplied for vehicle propulsion, being the energy content of the fuel or electricity consumed. The data tabulations are for the whole transport system, broken down into various subdivisions. Such ''system-wide'' data, unless they are disaggregated to a very fine level, do not generally show up the attributes of particular transport vehicles, and for this reason have been criticized overseas. To avoid this error of omission data are also presented on particular transport vehicles apart from the main data sets. Wherever possible, to eliminate cumulative errors, global data have been used as control totals and a process adopted of successive breakdown into subdivisions of the transport system. Only in a few cases, where New Zealand data are lacking and could not be inferred, have overseas data been introduced and then only when these were judged to be reasonably applicable to the New Zealand situation.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[This is the report of a survey conducted for the IRCA on track structures, track laying and track maintenance on the following railways: Australia, Great Britain, Japan, Ireland, USA (Southern Railway), Mexico, New Zealand, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Rhodesia and USSR.  With exception of high-speed lines, the criteria determining to a considerable extent the design of rail track is freight traffic density. The Sections: Main operating parameters; Descriptions of various railway track elements, Technical and Economic comparison of various kinds of permanent way and its elements; Conclusions.  Among conclusions: Welded track is superior and may be used with concrete or wooded ties; jointed track can be recommended only with wooden ties; rail weight is increasing; rail fasteners still require technical development; hard crushed stone is the preferred ballast; main track rails may be used for relay on secondary lines; track overhauls are fixed by service life of rail; running maintenance can be cyclical or spot with small gangs performing all required repairs.]]></description>
