      <title>NORTH DAKOTA INTERSTATE SYSTEM ACCIDENT STUDY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS REPORT WAS TO SHOW COMPARISONS OF ACCIDENT, INJURY, AND FATALITY RATES BETWEEN THE COMPLETED PORTIONS OF THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM AND EXISTING U. S. NUMBERED RURAL HIGHWAYS WITHIN NORTH DAKOTA. THE REPORT WAS PREPARED IN TWO PARTS. PART I CONSISTED OF A COMPARISON OF THE ENTIRE RURAL INTERSTATE MILEAGE OPENED TO TRAFFIC PRIOR TO JANUARY 1, 1962, WITH SIMILAR LENGTH SECTIONS OF NEARBY EXISTING HIGHWAYS. IN PART II, TWO SHORT SECTIONS OF INTERSTATE 94 WERE SELECTED AND COMPARED TO NEARBY EXISTING U. S. ROUTES. RATES WERE COMPUTED FOR THE EXISTING HIGHWAYS BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER THE CORRESPONDING INTERSTATE SECTIONS WERE OPENED TO TRAFFIC. THE ACCIDENT RATE ON THE INTERSTATE SYSTEMS WAS 15 PERCENT LOWER THAN THAT ON THE EXISTING ROUTES. THE RATES FOR INJURIES AND FATALITIES WERE RESPECTIVELY 54 AND 86 PERCENT LOWER ON THE INTERSTATE SYSTEM THAN ON THE EXISTING ROUTES.       <title>1988 ANNUAL REPORT OF FATAL AND INJURY MOTOR VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This annual report contains statistics on fatal and injury motor vehicle traffic accidents in California for the year 1988.  The mileage death rate (the number of persons killed per 100 million miles of vehicle travel) in California in 1988 was 2.2, the lowest in the state's history.  The drop of 0.2 from the 1987 mileage death rate is particularly significant in light of the 8% increase in vehicle miles traveled.  Other highlights from this report are as follows: During 1988, California had a total of 566,473 traffic accidents, 4,859 fatal, 235,491 injury and 326,123 property damage only.  Children under the age of 15 accounted for 34.0% of pedestrian victims and 36.6% of bicycle victims (victims killed and injured).  Speed was indicated as the Primary Collision Factor in 22.6% of the fatal and injury accidents.  Of the licensed drivers in California, 28.9% were under 30 years of age; however, they represented 45.2% of all drivers in fatal and injury accidents.  Hit-and-run was indicated in 10.8% of the fatal and injury accidents.]]></description>

      <title>TRAFFIC DEATHS UP ONE PERCENT IN 1988</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Motor vehicles deaths increased 1% in 1988 over 1987.  The 1988 total is estimated at 49,000 compared with 48,400 in 1987.  Travel in 1988 increased for the eighth year in a row.  The mileage death rate in 1988 is 2.46.  Injuries causing disability beyond the day of the accident are estimated at about 1.8 million for 1988, with less serious injuries probably equaling twice this number.  Many factors determine the annual result.  Factors such as increased vehicle travel, more vehicles and drivers, greater speeds, and more lightweight cars add to the fatality total. Factors that offset this increase include improved vehicle safety, limited access highways, driver education, etc. Changes in regional statistics are also discussed. Urban-rural fatality experience is discussed, and the increase in rural fatalities is noted.  The type of accidents causing death are also discussed.  Comments are made on the age of fatality victims.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Motor vehicle deaths totaled 2,960, a decrease of 3 percent from the February 1987 total of 3,050.  This article presents tabulations of traffic deaths from state records statistics.  Deaths for the first 2 months showed a decrease of less than 0.5% from 1987 2-month total of 6,330.  Deaths for the 12-month period ending February totaled 48,780. Statistics for disabling injuries, cost of motor vehicle accidents, and mileage death rate are briefly discussed.]]></description>

      <title>1983 TRAFFIC DEATHS: THE DOWNWARD TREND CONTINUES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This article reports on U.S. traffic fatalities for 1983 as determined by the National Safety Council.  The 1983 total is estimated at 44,300, a 4 percent decrease from 1982.  The month recording the highest number of fatalities during 1983 was July with 4,320; the lowest number, 2,840, occurred in February.  The mileage death rate in 1983 is indicated to be 2.73 (deaths per 100 million vehicle miles of travel).  This rate is a 6 percent decrease from the 1982 rate of 2.89.  Other items reported include injuries, factors affecting motor vehicle deaths, regional changes, urban-rural fatality experience, deaths by type of accident, deaths by age of victim, and state and city experience.]]></description>

      <title>NIGHTTIME DRIVING AND FATAL CRASH INVOLVEMENT OF TEENAGERS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Data from the 1977 National Personal Transportation Survey and from the Fatal Accident Reporting System were used to compute mileage-based fatal crash involvement rates of drivers, by age, sex, and time of day.  Teenagers drive less than older drivers but do more of their driving at night.  They have much higher numbers of drivers in fatal crashes based on miles driven than do older drivers: their nighttime rates are particularly high.  Sixteen year olds, especially males, have by far the highest fatal crash rates per mile, both nighttime and daytime.  More widespread adoption of driving curfew laws would very likely produce substantial reductions in fatalities involving 16 year old drivers.]]></description>
