      <description><![CDATA[The purpose of this book is to accelerate the understanding of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and encourage new and innovative applications.  Each chapter is authored by an individual or group of individuals who are recognized as world-class authorities in their area of GPS.  The two volumes are intended to be complementary.  Volume I concentrates on fundamentals and Volume II on applications.  This volume, Volume II, concentrates on two aspects:  augmentations to GPS and detailed descriptions of applications.  It consists of Parts III to VI.  Part III, Differential GPS and Integrity Monitoring, and Part IV, Integrated Navigation Systems, expand on GPS with explanations of supplements and augmentations to the system. The supplements enhance accuracy, availability, or integrity. Of special interest is differential GPS which has proven it can provide sub-meter (even centimeter) level accuracies in a dynamic environment.  Part V, GPS Navigation Applications, and Part VI, Special Applications, are detailed descriptions of the major applications in current use.]]></description>

The reasons for the selection of the vessel propulsion package consisting of gas turbine engines and waterjet pumps are discussed in some detail.  The paper covers the problems experienced to date with this equipment in continuous marine operations.]]></description>

      <title>CORROSION OF TIN-BASE BABBIT BEARINGS TO FORM TIN OXIDES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Substantial corrosion of Babbit turbine and reduction gearbox bearings has been found over recent years in ships. The nature of this corrosion appears identical with that previously called tin oxide corrosion in that it takes the form of a hard black surface layer.  A simple test method has been developed which can produce the corrosion under laboratory conditions and is sensitive to the lubricating oil used.  Eleven turbine oils of various properties have been compared and their corrosive properties found to differ greatly.  Chlorinated wax EP additives have been shown to cause Babbit corrosion under certain conditions.  A more elaborate experimental method has demonstrated that concentrations of water as low as 500 ppm can render an oil corrosive.  The corrosive mechanism has been considered, and a reaction scheme involving three steps proposed.  Possible remedies are discussed in the light of the evidence given.]]></description>

      <title>CORROSION FATIGUE BEHAVIOR OF 13 CR STAINLESS STEEL FOR TURBINE MOVING BLADE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Failure of the blades of marine and compressor driving turbines -- due to corrosion fatigue -- has often been reported in recent times.  However, little information is available on the corrosion fatigue of 13 Cr stainless steel used for the moving blades of turbines.  This paper presents the results of rotating bending fatigue tests on 13 Cr stainless steel in NaCl and NaOH aqueous solutions of various concentrations, and observation results of corrosion pits, subcracks and fracture surface of the specimen in the cited environments.  The concentration of Cl at the bottom of the corrosion pit is found to be one of the factors which govern the corrosion fatigue behavior of 13 Cr stainless steel in environments containing C1.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[This article deals with the use of lightweight, easily handled pumping systems based upon the positive-displacement pump that can provide the solution to salvage problems which crop up when tankships loaded with oil or liquid petrochemicals run aground or sink.  The positive-displacement pump is more energy efficient at high viscosity.  Used in conjunction with present emergency transfer systems that are effective with low-viscosity liquids, this type of pump can reduce the environmental and financial impacts of tanker casualties.]]></description>

      <title>MANUFACTURING METHOD OF LARGE-SIZE MARINE HIGH-PRECISION GEARS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper relates to the manufacture of turbine reduction gears for the propulsion of large tankers of 200,000 to 500,000 tons as well as the medium-speed diesel planetary reduction gears used chiefly for driving cargo ships of 20,000 to 50,000 tons.  The authors outline the key points in the manufacture of large gears of diameter exceeding 5 m, in the case of the turbine reduction gears, and of internal gears of diameters exceeding 3 m, in the case of the planetary reduction gears, indicating new machining techniques for solving the problems involved.  Also, large-size, large-module, high-precision ground gears are required for multiple medium-speed diesel ships which will be used in the future as high-speed container ships.  The arc-reference type large-size gear grinding equipment which has been developed for this purpose is also described.]]></description>

      <title>PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE TANKER MARKET</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The severity of the tanker slump, and the fact that it will persist for some time into the future, have led many of those involved in the industry to consider ways in which the tanker surplus can be reduced, and ultimately eliminated in order to improve the state of the tanker market.  The most direct action is the cancellation of new building orders. Owners started to pursue this course of action around the middle of 1974 and since that time almost 60 million dwt has been cancelled.  Given the probability of a maximum 8% annual growth in oil demand, a balance in the tanker market can only be achieved by the introduction of one or more of the measures currently being contemplated by INTER-TANKO and IMIF, such as accelerated scrapping (possibly in the form of a scrap and build policy) or a coordinated lay-up scheme, or the universal acceptance of segregated ballast.  The most area, for new construction is in the up to 70,000 dwt class where surpluses could well disappear before 1980.  Freight rates for such small ships would then rise at a faster rate than for medium and VLCC's.]]></description>

      <title>STERN BEARINGS -- IN SERVICE MEASUREMENTS OF TAILSHAFT ATTITUDE, BEARING CLEARANCE AND OTHER PARAMETERS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Tests carried out on the split stern bearing of a 280,000 tdw VLCC are described and discussed in this paper.  The purpose of the tests was to establish the tailshaft attitude within the bearing, the minimum bearing clearance, the axial movement of the shafting, the lubricating oil pressure variation at the outboard oil seal and various stresses in the bearing assembly and associated hull plating.  The measurements cover both ballast and full load operation under a variety of main engine speeds and weather conditions and were obtained during normal commercial operation without any special manoeuvres being carried out for test purposes. The main findings of the tests were the unexpected effects of hull deflexions, the likelihood of achieving better shaft alignment by carrying out the alignment procedure at ballast draft and the fact that the tailshaft frequently runs in the oil ways normally cut into stern bearings.]]></description>
