NEW CRUISE FERRIES COMBINE COMFORT AND EFFICIENCY AT SEA

The article describes the propulsion system on the 32 600 grt cruise ferry SPLENDID. Four main propulsion engines, delivering up to 23 000 kW of power, were supplied by Fincantieri. These Sulzer type 8ZA40S engines, rated 5760 kW at 510 r/min, are connected in pairs to the two propeller shafts. The propulsion system provides a service speed of 23 knots; fuel supply on board is enough for 12 days navigation at this speed. Electric power requirements on board the SPLENDID were met with the installation of three Wartsila Vasa 6R32D diesel generators, rated 2150 kW each. The main power loads include three air-conditioning units (1700 kW each) and the KaMeWa 1000 kW bow thruster. See also abstract no 94071517.
