ANALYSIS OF ANCHOR MOORING LINES IN COHESIVE SEAFLOOR

An analytical solution method capable of determining the geometric configuration and developed tensile forces of mooring lines associated with fixed plate, pile or drag anchors embedded in cohesive seafloor has been developed. The solution method is capable of analyzing multisegmented mooring lines embedded in layered cohesive seafloor soils, utilizing a systematic iterative solution search method based on specified boundary conditions. The results of the developed analytical solution method have been verified through comparisons with the centrifuge model tests and field tests and were found to be very effective.

SETDOWN OF A CATENARY-MOORED GRAVITY PLATFORM

The setdown phase of the installation of a gravity platform requires a careful analysis of each step involved to prevent any damage to the structure. To do this, it is important to include all the significant forces, including the tensions in the mooring lines, in a setdown simulation. In this paper, the setdown of a conical gravity platform is simulated when temporary mooring lines that assist the setdown are fully accounted for. The setdown is achieved by ballasting the tanks in the platform according to a sequence controlled basically by the stability of the platform, as well as by its final location. A theory is developed to account for all the exact hydrostatic and ballasting forces, as well as the tensions in the mooring lines, which are catenary. Based on this theory, an interactive microcomputer program is developed to instantly monitor, report, and take action to correct any undesirable movements of the platform that may lead to negative metacentric height. The numerical scheme devised is applied to a conical platform to analyze its real-time behaviour during the setdown process. The effect of catenary mooring lines on the setdown process is shown by comparing the stability parameters with and without the mooring lines. Also, different ballasting sequences are shown to have a significant effect on the safety of the platform.

This paper presents methods for the evaluation of the absorption of energy by a mooring system as a result of its motion through the water. Extensive numerical results in terms of the absorbed energy per cycle of motion and the corresponding mooring line damping coefficients are given for a variety of mooring line configurations using both frequency- and time-domain techniques. The numerical predictions and experimental data are critically assessed.

Periodic inspection and testing of selected mooring lines has been carried out since the converted drilling vessel was installed on the Buchan field in 1980. The history of wire testing and integrity monitoring is described as well as the criteria for discard which, with sufficient experience, has changed from a biennial inspection/replacement programme to a service life basis.

DEEP WATER MOORING DYNAMICS

The dynamics of mooring lines for deep water applications with submerged buoys attached to them are studied both experimentally and numerically. First, the theoretical background is outlined. The experimental set-up, as well as the data acquisition procedures, are then detailed. This is followed by a presentation of the obtained results and their comparison with numerical predictions using both time and frequency domain computer codes. Very good correlation is obtained. Finally, the beneficial effects of buoys in reducing the mooring line dynamic tension is shown, provided that proper selection of their size, number and location is performed.

EFFECT OF MOORING LINE ARRANGEMENT ON THE DYNAMICS OF SPREAD MOORING SYSTEMS

A design methodology is formulated to reveal the dependence of nonlinear slow motion dynamics of Spread Mooring Systems (SMS) on mooring line arrangement. For a given SMS configuration, catastrophe sets are developed in the parametric design space showing the dependence of stability boundaries and singularities of bifurcations on design variables. This approach eliminates the need for nonlinear simulations. For general SMS design, however, the designer relies on experience rather than scientific understanding of SMS nonlinear dynamics, due to the high number of design variables. Several numerical applications are used to demonstrate counterintuitive ways of improving SMS dynamics. The SMS design methodology formulated in this paper aims at providing fundamental understanding of the effects of mooring line arrangement and pretension on SMS horizontal plane dynamics. Thus, the first guidelines are developed to reduce trial and error in SMS design. The methodology is illustrated by comparing catastrophe sets for various SMS configurations with up to three mooring lines. Numerous examples for a barge and a tanker SMS which exhibit qualitatively different nonlinear dynamic behaviour are provided.

The paper is concerned with the prediction method for the motions and tensions of mooring lines on slack-moored floating oceanic architectural building in a coastal zone. The motions and the tensions of mooring lines were estimated by time domain numerical simulation. The method includes the nonlinearity of the mooring system, and slowly varying drift force. A time domain numerical simulation was performed for motions and tensions of mooring lines on a floating barge in two component waves. The results obtained by numerical simulation were compared with the experimental results. The validity of the method was confirmed.

These materials are attractive for applications requiring high stiffness, high tenacity and low density. They are frequently used for mooring of ships, offshore installations, defence and oceanography. Advantages and limitations of these ropes, relative to the traditional natural fibres and steel wire ropes is also discussed in the light of the requirements for marine applications. The replacement of intermediate performance ropes with HPSFRs is critically analyzed.
