THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE SURVEY WERE TO DETERMINE' /A/ THE FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE AND VOLUME OF REACTIVE CARBONATE AGGREGATES BEING PRODUCED IN VIRGINIA, /B/ THE GEOGRAPHIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF THIS MATERIAL, /C/ THE LITHOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EXPANSIVE ROCKS, AND /D/ ANY CORRELATIONS WHICH MIGHT EXIST BETWEEN MINERALOGIC COMPOSITION AND EXPANSIVE OR OTHER REACTIVE BEHAVIOR.       <description><![CDATA[THE ALKALI-CARBONATE ROCK REACTION THAT HAS CAUSED SERIOUS DETERIORATION OF CONCRETE APPEARS TO BE LIMITED IN ONTARIO TO ROCKS OF THE GULL RIVER FORMATION. THIS MIDDLE ORDOVICIAN FORMATION, WHICH OCCURS IN A NARROW ZONE AVERAGING ABOUT 10 MI WIDE ALONG THE SOUTHERN BORDER OF THE CANADIAN SHIELD, WAS FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE BLACK RIVER FORMATION BUT WAS REDEFINED BY LIBERTY ON THE BASIS OF LITHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS. BECAUSE MANY QUARRIES, AMONG THEM THE CLASSICAL KINGSTON QUARRIES, ARE LOCATED IN THIS FORMATION, AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED TO ESTABLISH WHETHER THE EXPANSIVE TYPE OF ROCK FOUND AT KINGSTON OCCURS ELSEWHERE IN ONTARIO AND, IF SO, WHETHER IT MIGHT BE USED BY ONTARIO HYDRO AS CONCRETE AGGREGATE. /AUTHOR/]]></description>

      <title>THE GEOLOGIC SETTING OF GREATER KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI-KANSAS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The topography and surface features are described, the most prominent rock types are reviewed, and the economic resources are outlined of Pennsylvania rocks underlying greater Kansas City.  The City is located at the Confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers and the most conspicous erosional features are northeast-trending escarpments.  Glaciation is noted to have had an impressive role in the local landscape.  The aggregate thickness of Pennsylvania rock is less than 900 feet at Kansas City and only 300-400 ft of this total is exposed.  For the most part the rock section is composed of alternating limestone and shale, and its repetitious succession illustrates a feature referred to as cyclothem.  Details are outlined of some of the 25 separable exposed rock units.  The exploitation of the readily accessible high quality limestone has been important to the economic growth of Kansas City.  Other local resources include sand, gravel, clay, shale, sandstone, oil, gas and water.  A major economic resource is the open space created by extensive mining: a large volume of underground space is now utilized for storage, warehousing, manufacturing, offices, and a variety of other purposes.]]></description>

      <title>ERTS COLOR IMAGE MAPS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The U.S. Geological Survey has prepared several experimental color-image maps from Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) images.  Examples are the gridded image of Upper Cheseapeake Bay and the mosaic of New Jersey.  Both were printed at a scale of 1:500,000 with a full UTM grid and placed on public sale in February 1974.  A color mosaic of Florida is being prepared from 16 separate scenes.  It also will be printed at 1:500,000 scale.  The publication of maps from satellite images has required the development of innovative procedures combining computational photogrammetry, image geometric control, photomechanical mosaicking, and color lithography.  These color-image maps are the first to meet cartographic standards and to be lithographed for public sale at a nominal charge.  The detailed procedures and equipment are described, along with some of the results.  /Author/]]></description>

THE MOST IMPORTANT ALKALI-REACTIVE ROCKS ARE LISTED AND DESCRIBED. INFLUENTIAL FACTORS OTHER THAN LITHOLOGIC COMPOSITION ARE AVAILABILITY OF THE ALKALI PRESENT IN THE AGGREGATE, ROCK TEXTURE, AND PARTICLE SIZE. THESE BECOME IMPORTANT IN JUDGEMENTS CONCERNING THE STANDARD PERMISSIBLE LIMITS ON DELETERIOUS CONTENT FOR THE VARIOUS LITHIC TYPES. DISCUSSIONS OF THE ARTICLE EMPHASIZE THE NEED FOR CONSIDERATION OF CONDITIONAL FACTORS IN CONJUNCTION WITH PETROGRAPHIC EXAMINATION. EXPANSION FOR LOWER PROPORTIONS OF CHERT AGGREGATE IS MENTIONED IN THIS CONNNECTION.]]></description>
