      <title>Enhancing resilience to disasters using social media</title>

      <description><![CDATA[During the last decade, Social Media (SM) have emerged as a prominent trend in social communication, with online platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to conquer the internet space with millions of visitors per day. SM usage generates an astonishing amount of information, which could be used for scarcely experienced situations, such as mass convergence and emergency events. This study presents a preliminary exploratory analysis on examining the capacity of SM to extract information on individuals' choices during evacuation. The authors collect tweets from the evacuation in Oroville, California USA due to danger of flood and the evacuation. The data are used for the creation of a user sample which allows the collection of historical data The historical data are compared with the data collected during and after the evacuation. The goal of this comparison is the extraction of potential information related to the evacuation.]]></description>

      <title>EFFECT OF ROCK CONTENT ON COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF CLAVEY GRAVEL</title>

      <description><![CDATA[RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF COMPACTION STUDIES WHICH HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED BY THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF WATER RESOURCES ON THE VERY ROCKY SOIL SELECTED FOR THE IMPERVIOUS CORE OF THE OROVILLE DAM IN CALIFORNIA. THE MATERIAL STUDIED WAS A CLAYEY SAND TO CLAYEY GRAVEL CONTAINING A PERCENTAGE OF PLUS NO. 4 U.S. STANDARD SIEVE SIZE VARYING UP TO 65 PER CENT BY DRY WEIGHT OF TOTAL SAMPLE. CONSIDERABLE ATTENTION WAS PAID TO EFFECT ON COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF VARYING MAXIMUM PARTICLE SIZE, MOULD DIAMETER, AND HAMMER SIZE AND WEIGHT COMPARISONS WERE MADE BETWEEN THE MOISTURE-DENSITY RELATIONSHIP AS DETERMINED BY TEST AND AS COMPUTED USING A THEORETICAL ROCK CORRECTION FACTOR. FAMILIES OF CURVES WERE DEVELOPED WHICH SHOWED THE INFLUENCE OF MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE MINUS NO. 4 FRACTION ON TOTAL SAMPLE DRY DENSITY. THE TEST RESULTS SUPPORT FINDINGS BY OTHERS THAT TOTAL SAMPLE MAXIMUM DENSITIES DEVIATE FROM THEORETICALLY COMPUTED VALUES BASED ON THE SOIL FRACTION AT RELATIVELY LOW ROCK CONTENTS. FOR TESTS ON THE MINUS 1 1/2-IN. FRACTION, HOWEVER, A VERY SMALL CORRECTION FACTOR IS NEEDED. THE PLASTICITY OF THE SOIL FRACTION IS SHOWN TO HAVE A NOTICEABLE EFFECT ON THE TOTAL SAMPLE MAXIMUM DENSITY.       <title>SLOPE FAILURES IN FOLIATED ROCKS, BUTTE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA</title>

      <description><![CDATA[THE SLOPE FAILURES DISCUSSED OCCURRED DURING RELOCATION OF HIGHWAY 40A AND THE WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD AROUND THE PROPOSED OROVILLE DAM AND RESERVOIR NEAR OROVILLE, BUTTE COUNTY, CALIF. THE RELOCATIONS ARE ROUTED ALONG THE EDGE OF THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY AND THROUGH THE RUGGED FOOTHILLS OF THE SIERRA NEVADA, WHERE 8 1/2 MILES OF THE RELOCATIONS PASS THROUGH METAMORPHIC ROCK OF THE CALAVERAS GROUP. MOST SLOPE FAILURES OCCURRED IN A ROCK TYPE CALLED PHYLLITE, WHICH HAS BEEN TIGHTLY COMPRESSED AND INTENSELY FOLDED DURING METAMORPHISM. DESIGN CRITERIA CALLED FOR NUMEROUS 3/4'1 CUT SLOPES, SOME IN EXCESS OF 100 FT IN HEIGHT. BENCHES WERE USED IN MANY OF THE DEEPER CUTS, HOWEVER, SOME LARGE CUTS WERE CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT BENCHES. SLOPE STABILITY PROBLEMS WERE MOST SERIOUS WHEN CUTS WERE MADE IN DIRECTIONS PARALLEL OR NEAR PARALLEL TO THE DIRECTION OF FOLIATION OF THE ROCK. VERY LITTLE WAS ENCOUNTERED WHEN CUTS WERE MADE AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE FOLIATION. THE NATURE OF THE FAILURES WITH RESPECT TO GEOLOGIC STRUCTURE, THE TYPE AND CONSISTENCY OF CRACKING ON FOLIATION, AND THE DIRECTION OF THE DISPLACEMENT ALONG THE PLANES OF FOLIATION SUGGEST THAT STRESS RELIEF WAS PART OF THE MECHANISM CONTRIBUTING TO ULTIMATE FAILURE OF THE SLOPES. /AUTHOR/]]></description>
