      <title>TRSB MICROWAVE LANDING SYSTEM DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM AT CHARLEROI, BELGIUM</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The demonstration at Gosselies Airport, Charleroi, Belgium, was held in conjunction with the United States TRSB demonstration program, and was the sixth in a series of operational demonstrations of several TRSB system configurations at selected airports in the United States and abroad. The TRSB Small Community System was installed to service Runway 25, the runway with a commissioned Instrument Landing System. Flight checks established that no mutual interference resulted. Operational demonstrations were made utilizing FAA Boeing 727 and Convair 880 test aircraft. Flight performance data was acquired with the Boeing 727 test aircraft only. Flight profiles included approaches on centerline and offset plus and minus 1 and 2 degrees at various elevation angles, and radials at constant altitude on centerline and offset plus and minus 10 degrees. Results of the operational demonstrations indicated that performance of the TRSB Small Community azimuth subsystem met ICAO (AWOP) 'full capability system' requirements. Although an accurate assessment of the elevation subsystem performance was not possible due to lack of adequate tracking data, the elevation angle deviations about an averaged value were well within ICAO (AWOP) 'full capability system' error limit boundaries.       <description><![CDATA[This paper describes a computer-based interlocking system for DC traction substation which we have developed recently. This system uses the programmable controllers (PCs) which are used in the factories, a digital relay system which uses microprocessors, an optical local area network (LAN) which connects PCs, interface modules which connect PCs and the machine.  We have made various tests for interlocking and tolerance to noise.]]></description>

      <title>CONTRIBUTION TO THE EXPANSION OF THE DRIVER-VEHICLE-ROAD MODEL IN ROAD PLANNING</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This contribution is a dissertation on expanding the driver-vehicle-road model in road planning by giving special attention to individual vehicles and to tracking.  The development of road tracking is described by studying dynamic driver motion models and optical tracking.  Problems and methods of road planning are discussed.  The driver- vehicle-road system is studied as a control system (Regelkreis).  The information flow from road to driver is observed.  Main research findings: the optical tracking of roads has to be made to follow psychological laws although psychology as yet has offered no solutions for problems of road planning; the information flow on the road should be measured and regulated with the aid of information theory; road design should be evaluated qualitatively by means of the rules of Gestalt psychology.  The research findings are applied to practical planning.]]></description>

      <title>APPARATUS FOR SEISMIC MODELLING OPTICALLY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Apparatus for the photoelastic study of propagating stress waves by a repetitive stroboscopic technique has been developed in a form suitable for seismic modelling.  Using a 30 cps repetition rate the transient waves propagate forward or backward or are "locked" in position on the viewing screen at the control of the operator.  An impact device capable of very brief contact time (1 msec) and high source strains (1/3 cm penetration) produces a very brief but intense mechanical transient.  This impacter, coupled with the large size of the models used (46 cm sq), permits wave propagation to be studied over a significant length of travel path, suitable for certain seismic propagation problems.       <description><![CDATA[THIS SUMMARY REPORT OF A MEETING CONCERN AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION CITIES VARIOUS SYSTEMS OF FULLY AUTOMATIC VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION WHICH ARE BEING DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO A REQUEST BY THE INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE, TUNNEL AND TURNPIKE ASSOCIATION. THOUGH THE PROJECT IS BEING TESTED BY THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE AND PORT AUTHORITY, THE STANDARDS BEING USED ARE DEVELOPED WITH A NATIONWIDE SYSTEM IN MIND. AVI SYSTEM EQUIPMENT INCLUDES A TRANSPONDER CARRIED ON BOARD THE VEHICLE TO BE IDENTIFIED, AND THE INTERROGATOR IN OR BY THE ROAD WHERE THE VEHICLE IS TO BE IDENTIFIED. THE THREE TYPES OF AVI DEVICES DEVELOPED ARE OPTICAL, MICROWAVE, AND RADIO FREQUENCY. TEST RESULTS OF THE VARIOUS TYPES OF SYSTEMS ARE CITED AND EVALUATED, AND COST STATISTICS ARE GIVEN. MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS OF AVI SYSTEMS ARE CONSIDERED, SUCH AS REVENUE COLLECTION, SAFETY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT, VEHICLE MANUFACTURE, ETC. THERE IS MUCH CONTROVERSY OVER THE USE OF AN AVI SYSTEM, AND SUCH ISSUES AS "INVASION OF PRIVACY" ARE DISCUSSED. THE NEED FOR DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE AVI SYSTEM IS CONSIDERED, AND METHODS OF ACQUAINTING APPROPRIATE AGENCIES ARE DECIDED UPON.]]></description>
