Application of the AAR Network Simulation System to the Illinois Central Railroad

This report concerns the application of the AAR Network Simulation System (Network Simulator) to the Illinois Central Railroad and summarizes the investigation conducted under a research agreement between the Illinois Central Railroad and the University of Illinois for the period 1 September 1970 to 31 August 1972. The final output of the research is a general purpose network simulation model that has been specifically tailored to the interests of the Illinois Central Railroad. The model is “general” in that with minor input changes it is possible for the railroad to investigate various managerial problems arising from blocking of traffic, train operation, changes in schedules, and utilization of facilities.

This Map of the Month illustrates Illinois Central’s (IC) melting-pot roots—some 88 lines that made up IC’s ‘Main Line of Mid-America” as late as 1971. Lines included the Dunleith & Dubuque line, the oldest line, which was admitted in 1869, and the Louisiana Midland, the most recent to be admitted in 1967. The railroad ran lines as far south as the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana to Minnesota and South Dakota. In 1972, IC’s merger with Gulf, Mobile & Ohio changed the map. Now the old IC is part of Canadian National.
