      <title>Study on Cyclic Variations of Laminar Flame Speed in Homogeneous Lean charge Spark Ignition Combustion</title>

      <description><![CDATA[It is known that lean combustion is effective as one of the ways which improves thermal efficiency of a gasoline engine. In the interest of furthering efficiency, the use of leaner mixtures is desired. However, to realize robust lean combustion it is necessary to reduce combustion cyclic variation while managing the emission nitrogen oxides. In this study, combustion analysis was carried out focusing on cyclic variations of the heat release of lean combustion. Since the initial flame kernel growth speed has a great effect on the indicated mean effective pressure, laminar flame speed (LFS) around the spark plug was analyzed. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry was used for the measurement of a fuel concentration around the spark plug. Moreover, a LFS predicting formula, which can be used in an area leaner than before, was drawn from detailed chemical reaction calculation results, and the LFS around the spark plug was also calculated through the use of this formula. With the presence of high in-cylinder flow or a pre-mixed fuel delivery the LFS variations around the spark plug decreased as top dead center (TDC) of compression was approached. As equivalence ratio was decreased, an increase in heat release variation was observed (COV of LFS). By COV definition the results present that the increase in COV of LFS is predominantly caused by a decrease in average of LFS as opposed to the standard deviation of the data set. This is inherent of lean combustion’s physical nature. In a similar fashion to lean combustion, but in the case of EGR combustion, heat release fluctuated in accordance to dilution ratio. These two scenarios can be linked by common LFS.]]></description>

      <title>Development of a high-speed two-colour system and its application to in-cylinder diesel combustion temperature and soot measurements with split injections</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In the present study, a high-speed two-colour system was developed in order simultaneously to investigate the temporal and spatially resolved flame temperature and soot concentration (the KL factor) in the combustion chamber of a diesel engine during the same engine cycle. The new two-colour system features a high-speed video camera and a high-repetition image intensifier. It is capable of capturing images at a high sampling frequency, so as to allow the possibility of investigating the flame temperature and soot distribution throughout a complete engine cycle. The system was calibrated against a tungsten ribbon lamp and tested on a Ricardo Hydra single-cylinder diesel engine for the in-cylinder diesel combustion temperature and soot diagnostics. Videos of combustion were taken through the optical access to the combustion chamber, and the radiation intensity was correlated with the analysed calibration data. The two-colour method was used to study the influence of the injection timing on the nitrogen oxide and soot emissions and the relation between the time histories of the local flame temperature, the soot concentration (the KL factor), and the exhaust emissions.]]></description>

      <title>EFFECT OF PETROGRAPHIC VARIATIONS OF SOUTHWESTERN IOWA LOESS ON STABILIZATION WITH PORTLAND CEMENT</title>

EXTENSIVE CHEMICAL TESTS WERE PERFORMED AS FOLLOWS: (1) CATION EXCHANGE CAPACITY USING AN AMMONIUM ACETATE METHOD, (2) EXCHANGEABLE CATIONS DETERMINED WITH A FLAME PHOTOMETER, (3) PH, BY AN ELECTROMETRIC METHOD, (4) CARBONATE CONTENT EXPRESSED AS PERCENT CALCIUM CARBONATE BY A VERSENATE METHOD, (5) SULFATE CONTENT DETERMINED BY WATER-SOLUBLE SULFATE METHOD, (6) CHLORIDE CONTENT DETERMINED BY MOHR'S METHOD, (7) FREE IRON OXIDE CONTENT, BY JEFFRIES' METHOD (8) TOTAL IRON CONTENT, AND (9) ORGANIC MATTER CONTENT DETERMINED BY A DICHROMATE OXIDATION METHOD. PARTICLE-SIZE ACCUMULATION CURVES FOR THE LOESS SAMPLES WERE DETERMINED BY PETROGRAPHIC ANALYSIS. MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF THE LOESS REVEALED THAT CLAY OCCURRED MAINLY AS COATINGS ON LARGER GRAINS, WHICH TENDS TO INCREASE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CLAY. DATA ARE PRESENTED ON THE SPHERICITY AND ROUNDNESS OF SILT GRAINS. SOIL-MECHANICS TESTS WERE PERFORMED TO GIVE INFORMATION OF SOME OF THE BEHAVIOR CHARACTERISTICS OF LOESS. SOIL CEMENT STABILIZATION IS DISCUSSED FROM THE BASIS OF CEMENT REQUIREMENTS, WEATHERING, AND MINERAL SURFACE AREAS. STABILIZATION OF SOIL CEMENT WITH TREATMENTS OR ADMIXTURES WERE ALSO INVESTIGATED. REACTION SHELLS WERE CAUSED TO FORM IN CONCRETE BARS UNDER CONTROLLED CONDITIONS. SIMILAR BARS MADE WITH ACCEPTABLE CARBONATE AGGREGATE WERE SUBJECTED TO THE SAME CONDITIONS FOR COMPARISON. LENGTH CHANGES WERE MEASURED AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTS WERE RUN ON BOTH TREATED AND UNTREATED BARS. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE GROWTH OF PROMINENT REACTION SHELLS THROUGHOUT THE CONCRETE WAS NOT ACCOMPANIED BY EXCESSIVE EXPANSION OF THE BARS.       <title>ROTARY COMBUSTION ENGINE HYDROCARBON SOURCE STUDIES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In an effort to improve the tradeoff between fuel economy and emissions in the rotary combustion engine, research was undertaken to identify unburned hydrocarbon sources in the exhaust.  Flame photography was used in conjunction with extensive time-resolved exhaust gas sampling.  Effects of air/fuel ratio, engine load, residual gas, and engine speed on combustion and hydrocarbon emissions were examined.  At lean air/fuel ratios, flame extinction in the combustion chamber's trailing portion was an important source of exahust hydrocarbons; the importance of flame extinction was diminished at richer air/fuel ratios.  At the richer air/fuel ratios, apex seal leakage appeared to be the dominant hydrocarbon source.  Apex seal leakage was also significant at leaner air/fuel ratios.  The earlier occurrence of peak time-resolved hydrocarbon concentration with increased apex seal leakage was probably the result of a more energetic jet of linkage gases which projected further forward into the exhausting combustion chamber.  The findings indicate that the diagnostic use of time-resolved data is worthwhile, particularly when interpreted in combination with flame photography.]]></description>
