      <description><![CDATA[Gravel pits in forest ecosystems provide unique habitats for a variety of wildlife species due to features such as steep banks, storage piles of excavated material, exposed mineral soil, and surface water.  In north central Minnesota there are 51 species associated with these characteristics.  Gravel-pit management and rehabilitation can be coordinated to meet wildlife management objectives by providing dead and dying trees for cavity-nesting species, shallow areas of surface water, and downed logs and by maintaining vertical banks and areas of bare ground.       <title>COMPACTION OF GRAVEL-BITUMEN BY MEANS OF VIBRATING ROLLERS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Full-scale research was conducted on the compaction of gravel-bitumen mixtures to study the influence of the following parameters: vibrating equipment, number of passes, nature of gravel- bitumen, compaction temperature, thickness compacted and eccentric moments of the unbalanced shaft on compaction quality.  This study was conducted with machines representative of the range of vibrating equipment currently on the market in France (for the compaction of roadbases). Three types of equipment were investigated: self-propelled one-roller machine, mixed vibrating pneumatic roller, and tandem roller.       <title>FAILURE TESTS ON BEAMS WITH ECCENTRIC WEB HOLES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Laboratory tests on two W16 x 45 A36 steel beams and three W16 x 40 A36 steel beams with reinforced eccentric web openings are described and summarized.  The principal test parameters were the opening size and the amount of opening reinforcement.  Tests were carried to failure and the deflections modes of failure, and ultimate loads recorded. The results of inelastic finite element analyses of the test beams are also summarized.  It is concluded that both the experimental and finite element results are reasonably consistent with the four hinge failure mechanism assumed in a previously developed ultimate strength analysis, and that this ultimate strength analysis provides an adequate prediction of the strength of beams with reinforced eccentric web openings.]]></description>

      <title>ECCENTRICALLY PRESTRESSED BOX GIRDERS UNDER COMBINED BENDING AND TORSION</title>

      <description><![CDATA[An investigation of bending-torsion interaction in eccentrically prestressed concrete box girders is reported. The ten specimens tested were underreinforced in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and were prestressed initially so that extreme fiber stresses were up to the limits allowed in practice.  The only intentional variable in the study was moment-torque ratio which was varied over the range of zero to infinity.  Bending-torsion interaction at first cracking was closely predicted by a parabolic equation proposed by H.  J.  Cowan for sections without transverse reinforcement.  A procedure is presented for developing interaction diagrams for girders of the type studied.]]></description>

      <title>STRENGTH AND STIFFNESS OF REINFORCED RECTANGULAR COLUMNS UNDER BIAXALLY ECCENTRIC THRUST</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Compression tests on nine reinforced concrete rectangular columns subjected to constant thrust and biaxially eccentric moments were conducted at the off-campus research facility of the University of Texas, the Civil Engineering Structures Laboratory at Balcones Research Center.  The complex nature of biaxially eccentric thrust and biaxially eccentric deformation is discussed briefly.  It is the purpose of this study to report the results of tests performed on the 5 in. x 9 in. rectangular columns.  Load measurements, lateral displacements, and longitudinal deformations were monitored through the middle 30 in. length of the 72 in.  long specimens.  All columns were reinforced identically with a reinforcement ratio equal to 0.011.  The flexural strength of cross sections could be predicted adequately by an elliptical function of ratios between biaxial moment components and uniaxial moment capacities.  The ACI recommendation that for skew bending, each component of moment should be magnified according to the stiffness about each principal axis of bending appeared to be a reliable technique only for thrust levels above 40 percent of the short column strength.       <title>ABNORMAL AND ECCENTRIC FORCES ON ELASTOMERIC BRIDGE BEARINGS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Elastomer bearing units representing a typical cross section of bearings currently in service, were subjected to static and dynamic forces at and above design limits.  An assessment of changes in characteristics, performance and modes of failure was made in accordance with the current codes of practice.  The general conclusion was that material and structural damage occurs in some units.  They all functioned adequately at stresses in excess of 200 percent of design values, beyond this their performance may be outside design limits.  Where failure occurs it is of a slow progressive nature rather than a rapid breakdown. /Author/]]></description>

      <title>CORROSIVITY MONITORING OF CRANKCASE LUBRICATING OILS FOR MARINE DIESEL ENGINES</title>

      <description><![CDATA[For qualification of crankcase lubrication oils in ship diesel engines the total acid number, strong acid number and total base number were determined. It is shown that these numbers have a low degree of reproducibility. A more rapid and reliable method for assessing the corrosive properties of a used oil, using the conductivity relation of ultrathin cooper layers on an inert base material, was developed. Encouraging results were obtained.]]></description>
