      <title>An approach to improve safety performance for work related road traffic by applying an occupational health and safety (OHS) framework</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In 2023, about 1.19 million road users were killed according to the WHO, and the Academic Expert Group (AEG) estimates that approximately one-third of these deaths were work-related. This paper emphasizes that employers are bound to occupational health and safety (OHS) standards while using public roads and should ensure the same attention to traffic injury prevention as in other workplaces. Using analysis of current practices, this paper explores the interplay between road traffic rules and OHS regulations. Work-related driving requires compliance with both road rules and OHS obligations. Organizations often violate road rules, undermining OHS principles that demand that employers take every reasonable step to maximize safety through the use of effective and evidence-based safety measures. This means that work-related traffic should exceed the minimum safety requirements encoded in road rules, and maximize safety through the use of the best available methods. Research shows that several key road safety prevention strategies have demonstrated positive effects, allowing for effective implementation of OHS laws. This paper proposes a 5-point assessment of organizational safety compliance and rigorous safety management based on well-established key safety factors.]]></description>

      <title>Behavioral Profiles of Crowdsourced Delivery Workers: Comparative Analysis of Prospective and Experienced Workers</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Crowdsourced deliveries have expanded globally, driven in part by an increase in online shopping demand. This study examines behavioral heterogeneity in crowdsourced delivery participation in South Korea using latent class analysis (LCA), with a particular focus on the differences between (a) individuals who are willing to participate but have no prior experience and (b) those who have actual experience working as crowdshippers. While prior studies have largely focused on stated willingness or intention to participate in crowdshipping, little is known about how these stated expectations differ from the actual participation patterns of experienced workers. The analysis identified three classes among prospective crowdshippers—Work–Life Balancers, Occasional Part-Timers, and Ambitious Crowdshippers—distinguished primarily by expected earnings and intended work intensity. Two classes emerged among experienced crowdshippers—Intermittent Gig Practitioners and Dedicated Crowdshippers—differentiated by realized earnings, delivery frequency, and vehicle utilization. The experienced sample was more male-dominated and younger, while the prospective sample was more gender-balanced and older. The findings offer practical implications for gig platforms and policymakers, including segment-specific scheduling, compensation design, and policy frameworks addressing worker safety and public-transport integration.]]></description>

      <title>Implementation of Wireless IoT Technology for Enhanced Communication and Monitoring in EVAC Slide Emergency Systems</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Emergency evacuation slides (EVAC slides) are critical safety devices used on aircraft to enable rapid egress during emergencies. While these slides provide a quick and reliable escape route, communication between separated slides during evacuation remains a challenge. Often, during raft deployment over water, slides may drift apart impeding communication among evacuees and rescue personnel potentially compromising safety. Existing aircraft EVAC systems lack integrated wireless communication relying on visual or voice signals that are unreliable in chaotic conditions. This paper explores the integration of wireless IoT technology into EVAC slide systems to facilitate inter-slide communication and monitor critical parameters such as slide air pressure and the floating weight of stranded passengers through embedded sensors. It proposes the adoption of Long Range (LoRa) modulation technology for wireless communication chosen for its low-power, long-range performance and license-free operation in emergency evacuation scenarios. In addition, the usage of this proposed technology can be further extended to locate the aircraft when other existing locating mechanisms fail.]]></description>

First, it seeks to identify the key indicators used to quantify heat stress, critical for accurately assessing individual risk levels. Second, it explores whether smartwatches can be effectively utilized to measure heat stress in individuals engaged in prolonged outdoor activities. Lastly, we examine the potential for heat stress predictive models that incorporate a closed feedback loop to prevent heat-related illnesses. Collectively, this exploration aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how heat stress can be better monitored and managed in occupational settings. It lays the groundwork for developing practical applications for achieving timely and cost-effective heat stress detection and mitigation.]]></description>

      <title>Struggling in a Man’s World: Moderated and Mediation Model for Women to Stay in the Logistics Industry</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Technological advancements have transformed the nature of work, attracting more women to challenging industries such as the logistics industry. Despite this technological advancement and progress in promoting gender equality, achieving gender parity in this industry remains stagnant. Using the extended self-determination theory, this study explores new mediating and moderating variables to identify factors influencing female employee retention in the logistics industry in Malaysia. Based on a quantitative approach and purposive sampling, 278 responses were collected from women in the logistics industry through online surveys. Most direct hypotheses were supported, and significant mediation and moderation effects were found. In addition to contributing to the body of knowledge on women in logistics, the findings provide insights for managers by highlighting the importance of meaningful policies to ensure female employee retention in the logistics industry and support SDG 5 to promote equal gender opportunities. © 2026, Faculty of Maritime Studies.       <title>The role of psychological stress in the subjective well-being of aviation ground crews: Mediating effects of social support and self-esteem</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This study investigated the relationship between psychological stress and subjective well-being among aviation ground crews, with a focus on the mediating roles of social support and self-esteem. In this cross-sectional investigation, 533 ground crew members completed validated assessments, including the Stress Self-evaluation Test, the Perceived Social Support Scale, the Self-liking/Self-competence Scale-Revised, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale. Statistical analyses were performed via R software and Mplus. (1) Single participants presented significantly lower subjective well-being than married individuals did (p = 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.349). (2) Psychological stress (r = - 0.527, p < 0.001), social support (r = 0.579, p < 0.001), and self-esteem (r = 0.678, p < 0.001) were significantly correlated with subjective well-being. (3) Three distinct mediation pathways emerged: the social support-mediated pathway, self-esteem-mediated pathway, and a chain-mediating effect through social support-self-esteem. Psychological stress was significantly associated with reduced subjective well-being in aviation ground crews, with tentative evidence of mediation through social support and self-esteem. Interventions targeting these psychosocial resources may improve well-being, but require further validation.]]></description>

      <title>Cardiovascular Disease Risk across Subsectors and Occupations in the Transportation and Storage Industry: A National Cohort Study</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major contributor to global morbidity and mortality. While the transportation industry is recognized as high-risk for CVD, variation across subsectors and occupations remains unclear. The authors evaluated CVD risk across subsectors and occupations in South Korea's transportation industry. This retrospective cohort study used linked data from Korean National Health Insurance Service and Employment Insurance databases. Male workers aged 35-54 years in 2013 who remained in the same occupation during 2012 and underwent health screening in 2012-2013 were included. Follow-up continued through 2022. The authors calculated age-standardized incidence rates, standardized incidence ratios (SIRs), and population-attributable fractions across industries, with stratified analyses by subsector, occupation and lifestyle factors. Among 2 300 512 workers, transportation industry exhibited the highest age-standardized CVD incidence rate (558.9 per 100 000 person-years) and population-attributable fraction (1.49%) of all industries. Within 182 551 transportation workers, driving-related occupations showed the highest SIRs, especially in land and freight subsectors. Aviation subsectors had lower CVD incidence and more favorable health indicators. These patterns remained consistent after stratification by obesity and smoking status. Substantial heterogeneity exists in CVD risk across transportation subsectors and occupations. Targeted prevention strategies are needed for high-risk groups, particularly drivers.       <title>Post-commute self-assessed work performance</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Commuting can have immediate and long-term impacts on employees’ behaviour and motivations at work. This study focuses on the self-assessed impact of commute mode on multiple aspects of work performance, namely energy and productivity at work, and punctuality in getting to work. Using large-scale national data (N = 6,671) from the Canadian Mobility Survey conducted in Fall 2024 across 12 metropolitan regions, we conduct weighted logistic regression models that investigate each self-assessed work performance aspect. We use three data subsets based on region population size (large, mid-size, and small). Our models account for main travel mode, commute duration, motivations for mode choice, and sociodemographic factors. For all three subsets, we find that active commuters (pedestrians and cyclists) are the most likely to express positive impacts of commuting on energy and productivity at work, followed by car users. Meanwhile, bus, streetcar, LRT, and BRT users are the least likely to express such results. Car users have a higher likelihood of expressing punctuality to work compared to pedestrians and transit users in all three subsets. Longer commute durations are associated with negative impacts on all three work performance measures, especially punctuality.Our study underscores that commuting is not a neutral transition between home and work but an influential factor in work performance. Investment in infrastructure that supports active transport and high-quality transit that is fast and comfortable can promote positive performance at work.]]></description>

      <title>Improving Internal Communications with SHA Employees</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Approximately 20 years ago, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) conducted a research project to audit its internal communications processes.  Many of the concerns identified in that study still exist today. The challenge the agency is facing is a large portion of its employee population are frontline workers who do not have indoor offices equipped with computers nor access to work phones. Their offices are our roadways.
While the challenges are similar, there are more options to make improvements, With advancements in technology and a changing workforce, there are many more tools and resources available for the agency to communicate with its more than 3,000 employees spread across the state.
SHA’s Office of Communication would like to conduct a study that examines the current methods used to reach employees to provide internal announcements such as training opportunities, HR information and agency accomplishments; hear what information employees want to receive and how they want to receive it; and identify strategies and best delivery methods to reach frontline employees effectively to ensure that every employee regardless of where they work has access to essential agency communications. 
This research will review the previous research and surveys to assess the recommendations provided and develop new recommendations for the following research questions:
•	How is SHA communicating internally with office staff and those in the field, many without regular access to work phones and computers?
•	What are the most effective ways to communicate with facility maintenance technicians (FMTs) and other field staff?
•	Are field staff and office staff satisfied with the way SHA is currently communicating to them?
•	How do staff – field and office – want information communicated?
•	What information does staff want to be communicated, information to:
	                - boost morale?
                - engage employees with the agency as a whole and not simply just within their departments?

               - ensure they are getting information that can provide employee growth and improve their quality of  work / life balance?
This study will help improve how SHA communicates with all employees, including front line workers, by identifying strategies based on the findings from focus groups and/or surveys. The results will lead to a more engaged workforce and ensure that essential information reaches these critical employees.]]></description>

      <title>Exploring employee acceptance of industrial vehicle-to-grid systems: The role of trust, perceived barriers and benefits</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The transportation industry is under growing pressure to reduce vehicle emissions. Especially vehicle-to-grid technology can leverage decarbonisation by utilising car batteries as storage for renewable energy, thereby addressing the shortfall in energy storage capacity. This technology offers substantial benefits especially for firms with high energy demand. However, widespread adoption requires employee willingness to participate in vehicle-to-grid charging, an area that has not been explored. Using structural equation modeling, this study evaluates employee acceptance of industrial vehicle-to-grid technology through an integrated model combining the Technology Acceptance Model with trust, perceived barriers, and benefits. Our study examines the acceptance of an emerging industrial system not yet commercially available, positioning it within the research area of technological forecasting and modelling. The findings indicate that perceived barriers negatively affect attitude towards the technology, while trust influences attitude and benefits positively. The relationship between perceived benefits and behavioural intention was not statistically significant. Additionally, group differences were observed between respondents based on their knowledge of the technology and electric vehicles in general. The research offers insights for firms and policymakers for fostering trust through standardised data protocols, decreasing perceived barriers by offering a range of flexible charging contracts, and creating knowledge about the benefits in test studios.]]></description>

      <title>Human Factor in MASS Shipping</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The paper presents the influence of the human factor on the safety of autonomous shipping with respect to interaction between management personnel involved in autonomous ship operation - Ship Master and ROC (Remote Operation Centre) operator. Against the background of the works conducted by International Maritime Organization (IMO)and the European Union, the influence of the human factor was analysed depending on the MASS (Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship) level of autonomy defined by IMO. A Bayesian-based model was proposed to assess the reliability of the Ship Master, ROC operator and their influence on the operational reliability of sea voyage of MASS with level 2 of autonomy. The mutual high reliability of both the Ship Master and ROC operator allows for significant improvement of sea voyage reliability. The prospect theory was introduced in the analysis of decisions making process in risky conditions of ROC operator, remotely controlling MASS with level 3 of autonomy, without a crew on board. The influence of the operator’s prospect and emotions can be described using decision weight functions. In both studied cases, decision support and cooperation is very important and the estimated influence of the human factor is lower than for a ship with level 1 of autonomy operated by Ship Master without ROC support.]]></description>
