GENERATING A BUS ROUTE O-D MATRIX FROM ON-OFF DATA

The accuracy of route origin-destination estimates generated from boarding-alighting data was tested against actual origin-destination data. The estimates of trip length distributions and origin-destination matrices did not statistically differ from the actual data in tests of both simple and complex (branching) bus lines. While a note of caution was offered about applicability to extremely complex lines, the procedure is to be recommended as both an inexpensive and accurate method of estimating route O-D matrices for existing lines. Limitations and applications of the method are examined. (Author abstract)

EVALUATION OF URBAN MASS TRANSIT SYSTEMS IN DEVELOPING CITIES - PART II

Three requirements are established as a prerequisite for meaningful evaluation: a structure plan for the city, relevant evaluation criteria against which project performance can be measured and an inter-agency forum where key issues can be resolved. The first requirement of evaluation is that a soundly based structure plan for the urban area exists which clearly establishes: (1) objectives (incorporating national objectives); (2) existing problems and the priority attached to their resolution; (3) the existing (5 year) programs of government agencies; and (4) desired changes in development; (5) a data base for sectoral planning - population, socioeconomic and land use data for the present and for selected future years.

STATISTICAL AMPLITUDE DISTRIBUTION ANALYZER

The system enables the amplitude istribution of variable quantities to be obtained even for long distances or time intevals. The main parts are: input transduces (of acceleration, forces, etc.), trigger connected with wheel revolution, amplitude analyzer, memory and printing unit. Typical field of application is the evaluation of the "degree of driving severity" of vehicles on various roads and circuits. This offers a basic knowledge for fatigue evaluations and road test duplications, to reproduce actual road conditions.
