      <title>CORE ORIENTATION</title>

      <description><![CDATA[A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF THE FOLLOWING CORING EQUIPMENT: CONVENTIONAL CORE BARRELS, RUBBER SLEEVE CORE BARREL, AND PRESSURE CORE BARREL. THE SPATIAL ORIENTATION OF CORES HAS REMAINED A LIMITED LABORATORY ACTIVITY BECAUSE OF LACK OF PROPER EQUIPMENT. THIS SITUATION HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE CHRISTENSEN-HUGEL CORE ORIENTATION SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM IS ADAPTABLE TO ANY SWIVEL TYPE CORE BARREL OR LARGER. THE SYSTEM IS FIELDWORTHY, HAVING CUT AND ORIENTED THOUSANDS OF FEET OF CORE, USING NEAR-CONVENTIONAL CORE BARRELS. THREE GROOVES ARE CUT INTO THE CORE CONTINUOUSLY AS IT ENTERS THE BARREL. THE REFERENCE GROOVE HAS A FIXED, KNOWN RELATION TO THE ORIENTING LUG WHICH APPEARS ON THE SURVEY INSTRUMENT'S PHOTOGRAPHS TO BE TAKEN EVERY 2 MINUTES, EVERY MINUTE, OR 3 PICTURES PER MINUTE, DEPENDING ON THE CLOCKS USED. THE ORIENTING SYSTEM USES MULTISHOT DIRECTIONAL SURVEY INSTRUMENTS, THE MODIFIED DOUBLE-TUBE CORE BARREL AND DIAMOND CORE BIT, AND THE HUGEL SCRIBING SHOE IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE BIT. FIELD PERFORMANCE IN CORING THOUSANDS OF FEET SHOWS THAT RELIABLY ORIENTED CORES CAN BE OBTAINED ON A COMMERCIAL BASIS WITH THIS TECHNIQUE. THE CORE IN THIS SYSTEM IS CONTINOUSLY GROOVED BY THREE SPECIAL KNIVES, AND ORIENTATION IS OBTAINED BY CORRELATION BETWEEN THE GROOVES AND PICTURES FROM A MULTISHOT SURVEY INSTRUMENT ROTATIONALLY FIXED ON THE STATIONARY INNER BARREL ASSEMBLY. THESE DEVELOPMENTS GIVE PROMISE OF EXPANDING INTEREST IN CORE ORIENTATION.]]></description>

      <title>A NEW DISTANCE FUNCTION FOR MODELING TRAVEL DISTANCES IN A TRANSPORTATION NETWORK</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Continuous location models generally use the Euclidean or rectangular norm to approximate travel in a transportation network. This paper considers a new and more accurate distance measure, termed the weighted one-two norm, which is a positive linear combination of the preceding norms. A directional bias function is introduced to show the equivalence of this distance measure to the well known l(sub beta) norm. The authors then formulate a simple linear regression model to fit the parameters of their distance function to a given data set. Some novel applications based on standard statistical tests are derived which provide practical insights into the nature of networks with rectangular bias. The results are readily extended to other types of networks.]]></description>

      <title>REEXAMINATION OF DIRECTIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF HIGHWAY TRAFFIC</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper provides a review of the existing concepts and procedures regarding directional split, and studies the temporal variation of directional split and its relationship with type of road.  The paper also describes a proposed sensitivity analysis approach that asserts the importance of an accurate determination of directional distribution, and applies this approach to calculate the design directional split from permanent traffic counter data.  The study found that in general directional split does not remain stable, even during the highest volume hours of the year which are considered important for the planning and design of highway facilities.  These and other study findings are presented and discussed.]]></description>

      <title>THE INFLUENCE OF PHYSICAL DISEASE AND ITS TREATMENT ON DRIVING PERFORMANCE. MEDICINES AND ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[British law places an obligation on all applicants and driving licence holders to declare any medical disability which might affect safe driving now or in the future.  The drivers medical branch at the licensing centre investigates all notifications.  Driving examiners conduct driving tests on medical disability cases.  Their reports are considered by the medical advisers.  Special mention is made of sufferers from epilepsy and diabetes where in some cases medicines can reduce rather than exhance accident risks.  In a study carried out in 1985, the author found that 17% of acute collapses at the wheel were associated with insulin-treated diabetes, only 10% were due to coronary heart attacks, and 7% to strokes.  Despite an increasing number of notifications from geriatric drivers due to britain's ageing population, it is rare to find evidence of driver impairment relating solely to therapeutically prescribed ethical products.  The beneficial effect of a possible increase in the prescribing of placebos is considered. (TRRL)]]></description>
