      <description><![CDATA[The Phase III effort of this research project was directed toward the specification of a practical single-line instrument for the real-time measurement of surface texture from aboard a moving vehicle. Existing instrument concepts were investigated and evaluated, but proved to be inadequate for use aboard a vehicle moving at typical highway speeds. A new instrument concept was devised that showed the potential for use in the moving vehicle application. This concept involves projection of a very short duration, slit of light onto the road surface and detection of the resultant illuminated profile of surface texture with a sensitive vidicon television camera. Analytical and experimental evaluation of this concept verified its feasibility. The preliminary design, performance specifications, and implementation plan for a prototype of this instrument were prepared.]]></description>

      <title>A SOLID STATE DIGITAL DATA RECORDER FOR MONITORING AUTOMOTIVE CRASH ENVIRONMENTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[A solid state digital data recorder has been developed for use in monitoring automotive impact environments. The recorder was designed to be a general purpose, on board data acquisition system. Each recorder channel has its own sensor preamplifier, analog to digital converter, 4096 x 8 bit random access memory, and digital to analog converter. The functions of reading and storing data by the recorder channels are determined by a single, common control module. A nine channel system was evaluated via a pneumatic shock machine, vibration testing on a shaker, 30 mph sled simulated vehicle-barrier impacts, and 30 mph vehicle barrier impacts.]]></description>

      <title>AUTOMATION OF THE SCHONFELD METHOD OF HIGHWAY SURFACE TEXTURE CODE ASSIGNMENT. VOLUME IV. PROFILE CLASSIFICATION TECHNIQUE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In Phase I of the research project, it was demonstrated that the Schonfeld method of surface texture classification could be automated by electronically digitizing stereophotographs of the actual surface and then performing a computer analysis on the digital surface data. However, while it is possible to collect the necessary pavement data on-board a moving vehicle, due to the off-line digitizing and considerable computer processing required, this approach is not readily adaptable for real time implementation. Phase II of this research project involved an investigation into the feasibility of automating the Schonfeld method using considerably less pavement data in the form of single line profiles rather than the complete surface description. A single line profile classification algorithm was developed from which surface statistics and Schonfeld parameters, equivalent to those obtained from the three-dimensional classification technique, could be calculated. This was applied to fourteen samples covering a wide range of bituminous pavements and the feasibility of using a single line profile technique for obtaining surface characteristics and the corresponding Schonfeld parameters was demonstrated.]]></description>

The recorder was designed to be a very general miniature data acquisition system and was mounted in the pelvic assembly of a 50'th percentile anthropomorphic dummy. An eight channel system was evaluated in a sled test series simulating a 30 mph vehicle-barrier impact. The dummy/recorder system was also evaluated in five vehicle collisions. During these tests the system successfully captured and stored impact information on all thirteen collisions in which it participated.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The purpose of the test program was to evaluate a self-contained solid state digital data acquisition system mounted in a 50th percentile male anthropomorphic dummy. The program consisted of conducting five automobile crash tests of various types with the crash-recorder-equipped dummy occupying different seating positions in each test and restrained by either conventional belts or an air cushion restraint system. Following each test the data were extracted from the self-contained recorder and transcribed onto a magnetic tape for further processing and the computation of dummy injury criteria.]]></description>
