      <description><![CDATA[A Singapore-based lifeboat and davit maintenance company believes that the mandatory recertification of lifeboat systems on a biennial basis would go a long way to ensuring the safety and creditability of the crew and lifeboat respectively.  The company say that the move is necessary due to an increasing trend in injuries and damaged lifeboats resulting from training accidents.  Two recent examples of damaged lifeboats received at the company which illustrate this are highlighted and two potential solutions to reduce unwanted accidents are proposed.]]></description>

A Norwegian company specialising in the supply of total equipment packages for both newbuildings and cruise ship conversions, has come up with innovative solutions that provide for greater safety, lower weight, and easier use and maintenance of such craft.       <description><![CDATA[International regulations now allow cruise ship tenders to also serve as lifeboats.  The cruise tender described in this article was designed with a tender capacity of 120 seats on the main deck, and additional space for 20-30 persons on the top deck.   Optimal capacity if for 150 persons, for use as a rescue craft.  New gravity type davits which have proved highly effective are also described. They are easy to maintain, light and reasonably priced.  Other advantages include simplicity of installation on board and lower installation height, owing to the use of innovatory geometry based on standard components.]]></description>

      <title>A CONSTANT-TENSION WINCH SYSTEM FOR HANDLING RESCUE BOATS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper describes a constant-tension davit winch and control system that has been developed to reduce the risks involved when launching and recovering small boats over the side of a ship. During a launching operation, slack cable is available automatically as soon as the boat rests on the water, allowing the cable to be pulled from the winch by hand. During a recovery operation, as the boat rises and falls on the waves, the davit-winch drum will yo-yo backwards and forwards, maintaining tension on the cable until the operator is ready to hoist the boat from the crest of a wave. This prevents the boat from being buffeted by the waves and avoids most of the shock loads that occur when a conventional davit winch is used.]]></description>
