      <title>SYSTEMIC DEVELOPMENT OF HOMOKINETIC SHAFT COUPLINGS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Homokinetic shaft couplings are used for the even transmission of rotary movement between shafts, whose position relative to one another is subject to change in operation.  Such machine elements are used in mobile drives (vehicles, ships, aircraft, rail vehicles) and in stationary drives (machine tools etc). The experiment was therefor made to systemize this type of coupling using design methods and gearbox technique, as there are several thousand patents, articles, and an enormous number of homo-kinetic shaft couplings worldwide.  Data are given on the requirements to be made of such couplings, their structure and solutions in principle (with variations, designed prototypes).  One concludes from the investigations that a systematic search for solutions with the aid of design methods increases the spectrum of solutions and the safety of solutions.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The investigation carried out in the context of this work gives information on the parameters causing gearbox scraping noises. Complete removal of the fault cannot always be guaranteed due to variations of the operating parameters or a slight modification of the geometry of the mass production parts, as many of the examined influences affect scraping in gearchanging in contrary ways.  The proposed new design gives instructions in principle on avoiding scraping noises in gearchanging and were able to be tested by random sampling in this work.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[In view of its torque/speed characteristics, it is essential that the internal combustion engine is connected with an appropriate assembly which is capable of tolerating the inevitable slip between engine flywheel and gearbox input shaft which occurs in certain phases.  Detailed knowledge of mechanical, electrical and electronic technology has enabled a simple system to be developed, which ensures that the torque transmissible by dry friction is controlled.  This is achieved by accurate control of the force on the lining and thus improves transmission.  This system can be used in conjunction with conventional manual gearboxes or, better, in any type of automatic transmission because of the quick reponse time obtained.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The relation between fuel consumption and certain vehicle parameters has been estimated from data related to the range of new passenger cars on the market.  The parameters comprise service weight, vehicle performance, type of gearbox, provision of catalytic emissions control and the time factor.  A negative trend in fuel economy in relation to service weight and vehicle performance of sold cars has resulted in the mean fuel consumtion in mixed driving not being reduced in a way that would otherwise have been possible.  It means in turn that the corresponding percentage reduction in CO2 emissions from road traffic has also been lost.  The data used to relate to just under 1,000 new car models and cover in principle almost all the new car models introduced on the Swedish market during the years 1980, 1984 and 1988.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The aim of the research project was to develop a low emission and fuel saving drive concept for a compact car. The requirements of private and business use in towns are to be met.  The targets of development aimed at include extremely low fuel consumption, low emission of harmful substances, extremely low external noise.  The technical development was directed to acceptable driving and suitable dimensions for fitting into a compact vehicle.  Apart from the description of the project, data are given on the engine (2 cylinder Diesel Dl engine, exhaust gas feedback), gearbox (5 speed momentum automatic gearbox), control engine and gearbox and noise prevention measures.  There are also reports on test rig experiments and experience of test operation with three vehicles of the Volkswagen Polo type.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[The aim of this work was to design an engine/gearbox control, which would ensure pleasant driving behaviour for the driver and also a minimum fuel consumption characteristic for the engine.  This aim was achieved within the limits set by the dynamic properties of the engine and this was proved on an actual vehicle with a smooth hydrostatic gearbox.  The necessary hardware for this, such as a microcomputer and throttle valve setting drive (speed control, anti-slipping control) is already provided nowadays in modern cars of higher price.  It was interesting to examine to what extent such concepts can be integrated in developed engine/gearbox controls and how optimum operation can be achieved for vehicles with other stepless forms of gearboxes and drive units.  The control concept developed appears to be applicable to other drives.]]></description>

      <title>AN ADVANCED TRANSMISSION ENDURANCE TEST FACILITY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In order to provide more testing capacity, and increase evaluation and development of transmission components, a new, totally computerized test room was built.  Automatic endurance testing, of both manual and automatic gear boxes, with simultaneous extensive data acquisition at 1, 10 and 200 Hz, combined with advanced data evaluation, are available.  Particularly gear shift sequences are recorded, and calculated values are used for deterioration trend analysis.  A function key oriented operator communication system is implemented to simplify preparation, start-up and evaluation of a test run.  The flexible test program, defined by the operator, consists of road information (curve radii, slopes, distances) and driver's behaviour (throttle positions, velocities, gear positions).  Closed looped control is used for the engine and the two foot-mounted DC-motors, which permits complete road load simulation without use of flywheels.]]></description>

      <title>A MICROPROCESSOR BASED CONTROLLER FOR A DRY PLATE CLUTCH AND CONSTANT MESH GEARBOX</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper describes the development of a microprocessor based controller for conventional dry plate clutch and constant mesh gearbox transmissions as found on heavy goods vehicles.  The controller is also applicable to vehicles fitted with synchromesh gearboxes.  The controller is designed to enable the vehicle to be driven in either a protected semi-automatic mode or a fully automatic mode.  The controller provides a cheap route to the advantages of automatic transmission, which include easier driving, improved fuel economy and improved reliability.  In particular it gives improved clutch and gearbox life, without incurring the cost, weight and fuel efficiency penalties of conventional torque convertor based automatic transmissions.  A description of the diagnostic aids incorporated in the controller covering both the depot maintenance and service aspects and the on-vehicle warning and limp home facilities is given.]]></description>

      <title>ENERGY CHARACTERISTICS OF ROAD VEHICLE REPRESENTED BY THE EXAMPLE OF AN ELECTRIC TRANSPORTER</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The aim of the research project was to allocate the energy consumption of a vehicle to concrete operating conditions.  The results of extensive investigations in the laboratory and in practical traffic conditions have confirmed that this is possible, though with some limitations (which are explained in detail).  The method for determining the energy consumption, as used for conventional road vehicles, is only partially suitable for assessing electric vehicles.  The investigation of an actual electric vehicle has confirmed previous experience, that the DC machine together with full electronic controls and a rigid gearbox work very effectively and are far superior to an internal combustion engine.  However, the storage of electrical energy by a lead-acid battery is connected with comparatively high losses.  As a synthesis of the investigations in the laboratory and on the road, semi-empirical simmulation model of an electric vehicle using the results found in practice is suitable.  This model, consisting of a mathematical technical equivalent circuit diagram of the whole vehicle, makes it possible to assess the energy characteristics in all practical relevant driving conditions.]]></description>
