      <title>BARGE CARRIER SYSTEMS: INVENTORY AND PROSPECTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This small book examines the use of Barge Carrier Systems in marine transport and also identifies possible areas of expansion.  The idea of carrying barges on an oceangoing ship became a reality as a way of moving goods more efficiently and economically.  On the other hand, the Container or RO/RO Ship is not a solution to what many accept as the fundamental problem--the slow unloading of the ship in port.  Following a discussion on technical characteristics of the various barge-carrying systems, Barge Carrier trade routes, comparative costing of systems, and the potential expansion of the barge-carrying system, the author concludes with some general advantages.  They are as follows: a) The use of Barge Carriers could be an important factor in reducing congestion in ports. b) Cargo handling from the barges can be undertaken at a wide variety of shallow draft docks and riverside facilities.  c) The most salient aspect of the barge is the versatility that derives from its ability to carry virtually any type of cargo--in this sense, the barge is in effect the ultimate form of unitization. d) The Barge Carrier provides a most logical solution to the transport problem in an energy conservation context--less Btu per ton-mile than railways, airways, or roads.  An extensive Bibliography containing 90 References on barge-carrying systems is appended.]]></description>

      <title>BARGESHIPS IN A SEAWAY</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This paper covers the Naval Coastal System Laboratory's efforts under Naval Sea Systems Command sponsorship to determine whether the LASH and SEABEE Bargeships can be used in a resupply role for amphibious operations where there are no ports or protected waters.  There are three questions involved.  Can these ships unload barges in unprotected waters and what sea states are achievable?  What are the barge handling problems?  How can the barges be unloaded? The second questions of handling barges consists of two parts: a) handling the barges at the stern of the Bargeship for both loading and unloading, and b) moving them from the ship to a marshalling or storage area from which they are taken to the unloading point.  This paper covers the capabilities of the LASH ship type to unload or load barges in significant wave heights up to 8 feet, and the Tug and deckhand operations to and from the stern of the Bargeship.]]></description>

      <title>EXTRADECK INCREASES BARGE CAPACITY BY 100%</title>

      <description><![CDATA[A 100% increase in barge capacity when carrying cars, palletised or crated cargo is now possible with the "Extradeck", a portable second deck for barges.   The Extradeck (for which patent application has been made) has been designed for easy installation and removal, its use requiring no previous preparation or welding of fittings to the barge structure.  Turn-round time is therefore only minimally affected when fitting or dismantling of the decks is required. The inital requirement for these Extradecks has arisen on LASH barges, which already have been used for shipping smaller foreign cars into the U.S.A.  The Extradeck is relatively light in weight and is capable of being rapidly assembled or dismantled.  When not in use, the component parts can be stowed compactly either on board the barge or ashore.  A prototype model of the Extradeck has been sponsored by the U.S. Maritime Administration for trials to be carried out by Prudential Lines and other U.S.-flag LASH operators.]]></description>

      <title>LASH (LIGHTER ABOARD SHIP)--A REVOLUTIONARY NEW CONCEPT OF MARINE CARGO TRANSPORT</title>

      <description><![CDATA[LASH is an extreme departure from other methods of marine cargo transport.  Barge-type lighters, each holding up to 415 long tons of cargo are lifted to and from the ship by a traveling crane.  The ship need not wait for congested docks to clear, but may load and discharge in deep water divorced of all port facilities.  As the lighters are of such size as to permit the transport of virtually all cargoes, all cargoes are thus given express scheduled service regardless of the commodity type be it agricultural, mechanical, raw, finished products, or bulk materials.  The LASH concept is not world-wide and presently operating 24 giant LASH ships, over 4000 LASH lighters, and four FLASH (feeder LASH) feeder vessels.  The concept continues to grow.  Concept and operational experiences are reviewed in the paper.]]></description>

      <title>FIRST SHORT-SEA BARGE CARRIER ENTERS SERVICE</title>

      <description><![CDATA[A new type of barge carrying ship, with a single hull forward and a twin hull aft, loads barges on the weather deck by means of an elevator located between the ship's after hulls.  This vessel, being much smaller than a conventional LASH ship, is excellent for use on inland waterways, and it can also accomodate three of the large LASH barges by locking them between the twin hulls.  The cargo handling gear, including the elevator and the weatherdeck gear, the ballasting system, and the propulsion system are all described, and the loading unloading procedure is also briefly explained.]]></description>
