MOTIONS AND JOINT LOADS OF A BARGE TRAIN IN WAVES

A model barge train, with 100:1 scale ratio, was tested in regular waves and random seas. The train was driven by a tugboat at the aft end and the barges were of a type which can be used in both a seaway and for inland navigation. The hulls were connected in either a linked or a jointed configuration and for each case the following experiments were performed: tests in regular waves of constant steepness at various speeds, test in regular waves at various speeds and wave steepnesses to test for linearity, and test in a random seaway, with a significant wave height of 14 feet. Heaving, pitching, horizontal joint load and vertical joint load were measured during the experiments and compared to one another and to theoretical results. (Author)

TOWING TESTS ON A MODEL OF A SELF ELEVATING OFFSHORE PLATFORM IN WAVES

Towing tests on a model of a self elevating offshore platform ship with a large mat under water were carried out both in still water and in waves. The towing tensions, the motions and the behaviour of the model under the towing condition were measured. The result shows that the resistance of the platform in waves can be estimated by adding the increment of the resistance which is proportional to the square of the wave height to the resistance in still water.
RESISTANCE OF BARGE TOWS: MODEL AND PROTOTYPE INVESTIGATIONS: CIVIL WORKS INVESTIGATIONS 814 AND 835: SUPPLEMENT

For convenience the basic data is presented in tabular form with added pertinent factors. A critical review of two formulae were incorporated, and additional parameters investigated. Resistance data covering eight single barges and two large flotillas were added, all in deep water. AD623 131 contains information covering the details of tank arrangement; test procedures; model-prototype comparisons; symbols; references; and other facts of material interest. Additional symbols and references are added.

EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF DRAG FORCES AND HINGE MOMENTS ON BARGE FLOTILLAS

A series of 1/5.52-scale models of a proposed inland barge flotilla was tested in a ship model basin. Various model configurations were tested in water depths varying from fifty to five feet and at speeds up to the maximum safe velocity. Model test results, extrapolated to full scale, are presented along with suggested operational limitations and recommendations for achieving improved performance. ( Author )
