      <description><![CDATA[The wheelset with assembled axlebox and fitted with 1000 mm wheels has been designed: for taking 22 t axleloads; to be interchangeable with existing UIC wheelsets; and for use with two-axled wagons and possibly bogied wagons.  It has: a short journal and a solid rim-sprayed wheel without offset and with curved web.  The recommendations of ORE Committees B 95 (RP 3 and RP 4), B 98 (RP 9) and S 1002 ((RP 2) are applicable to this standardised wheelset.  The wheelset axle is the same as that recommended in B 136/RP 12 for wagons with 920 mm 0 wheels.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Commencing from the axle calculation methods used by different railway Administrations (or by axle manufacturers) and the measurements made during line tests, the report proposes vertical and lateral forces to be allowed for in the calculation of wagon-axles.  The incidence of the forces introduced by braking (on the wheel or with axle mounted discs) has also been examined.  Taking the experience of some major Administrations as a basis (experimental studies and service results) the report also proposes some recommendations on the subject of geometric forms to be adopted for the different constituent parts of an axle (relative dimensions and transitions between sections of different diameter) and the preferred surface conditions on the different parts.  Finally, the values of permissible stresses to be taken into account at various sections of an axle and a simplified design sheet are given.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[In general, resistance to repeated stresses is taken into account in the design of axle journals.  But the stresses on the axle are constantly being modified during running; the forces are therefore not constant, as assumed in the calculations, but a succession of efforts.  It is absolutely impossible to know whereabouts in this success the points used for calculation occurs, both with regard to the intensity of the effort and the point in the stress cycle to which it corresponds.  The authors draw some conclusions based on present progress in research into fatigue strength and results of measurements of the forces exerted between wheel and rail.]]></description>

      <title>MICROWAVE MEASUREMENT OF STRESSES AND STRAINS IN REVOLVING PARTS</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The microwave equipment for measuring the dynamic stresses in revolving parts picks up the information by means of an aerial fixed near the moving part.  The modulated and amplified signals are fed into an oscilloscope.  The various units in the equipment have been miniaturised by the Testing Section of the SNCF Rolling Stock Department.  The equipment is used for measuring the stresses and strains in the axles of RTG trainsets, and in the cardan shaft transmission system of the Z 7001 railcar.]]></description>

      <title>THE TYPE OF AXLE-JOURNAL FOR ROLLER-BEARING WHEEL SETS, AND THE CHOICE OF THE ROLLER-BEARING AXLE-BOX</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Roller-bearing axle-box and their journals should be built in such a way that the smallest possible amount of tension and deformation is experienced in the axles-journals.  This can be achieved in the case of axle-boxes with short axle-journals by means of supporting cups placed at the ends of press assemblies, as well as by fastening the axle-boxes in an axial position.  In the case of roller-bearing axle-boxes carrying heavy weights, the deformation of the axles in the region of the bearing seat should be investigated.  The dimensions of the UIC axle-boxes are also adequate in the case of an axle strength of 25 mp. if use is made of an axle-journal having a diameter of 130 mm.]]></description>
