Vertical vehicle--track coupling element

This paper presents a finite element-based vehicle-track coupling element for analyzing the vertical dynamic response of the railway track under a moving train. The multi-body vehicle model used has 10 degrees of freedom and consists of 4 wheelsets, rigid bodies, and a 2-stage suspension. The track structure is modeled with 2 layers and includes rails, rail fastenings, sleepers, ballast, and subgrade. The equations of motion for the coupling element are derived in matrix form using the energy method. This element can be used to analyze the dynamic response of the coupling system with a moving train on a railway track on subgrade and can also analyze the response with a train running over a railway bridge. Two examples to illustrate the use of the element are also included.

TRAIN DETECTING EQUIPMENT USING LOOP COILS FOR THE AUTOMATIC TRAIN COUPLING SYSTEM ON SHINKANSEN LINES

This paper describes the automatic train coupling system developed by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). This system automatically docks a preceding train with a following one without worker operation. By using this system, JR East has been operating the transport capacity optimally by lengthening or shortening train arrangements on Shinkansen lines. For an automatic train coupling with various length trains, it is necessary to detect the tail position of a preceding train accurately. This system detects train equipment by using loop coils. These are more suitable for detecting the position than any other systems, such as truck circuits and axle counters. The system has been used in some stations on Tohoku Shinkansen lines.

TEST TO BE CARRIED OUT ON BEHALF OF THE COMMISSION "AUTOMATIC COUPLINGS." WORK OF THE ORE COMMITTEE B 51 UP TO THE 31ST JULY 1962

On May 1st 1960, a call for tenders was addressed to a hundred or so European and non-European firms; Fourteen firms replied to this call for tenders: Four capable of direct coupling with the SA 3-coupler which is used by the USSR Railways, and ten not capable of direct coupling with the SA 3-coupling with the SA 3-coupler. Following a decision of the Board of Managent of the UIC in September 1961, those coupler proposals not capable of coupling with the SA 3-coupler were held in abeyance. In the period elapsing since its creation (1958) until July 31st 1962, the Specialist Committee drew up the standard program of tests for the automatic couplers: Part A on test benches, Part B on special test tracks. The following preliminary studies and test were carried out: determination of the influence of the play in the running gear and suspension gear of wagons, with a view to determine the numerical coefficient of reduction to be introduced into the calculations for determining the laterial adjustment values of the test-benches; determination of the optimum length of coupler-shank; determination of the influence of the characteristics of the buffer springs on the functioning of the coupler at small impact speeds. The study of those questions relating to mixed coupling was given priority, since the possibility of the "progressive bringing into operation" of the automatic coupler depended upon the finding of a suitable solution to this problem. Concerning certain of these studies, some provisional results had already been obtained. The tests were being continued. The above-mentioned preliminary tests were able to be made thanks to the stock equipped by the SNCF, the DB, the CFF and the OBB on the occasion of a presentation of some of the proposed couplers to the Members of the General Assembly of the UIC in Paris in December 1961.

VEHICLE LONGITUDINAL CONTROL AND RELIABILITY PROJECT. A REVIEW OF ENTRAINMENT TECHNOLOGY

This report documents the results of a survey of entrainment technology conducted for the VLCR project. The technology review was conducted to evaluate the state-of-the-art in train formation and to identify those areas requiring special attention for Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) systems. The information which is summarized herein was derived through: (1) a literature search and review; (2) discussions with coupler manufacturers; (3) a questionnaire to rapid transit operators; and (4) a study of transit authority coupler specifications. The methods and the results obtained within each of these activities are described within the report. The literature search involved both manual and computerized search techniques. The most applicable documents are listed in the Appendix: "Annotated Bibliography". The discussions with coupler manufacturers allowed the formation of a list of existing coupling equipment applicable to systems and the assessment of potential difficulties in the adaptation of coupling equipment to AGT vehicles. Areas probably requiring significant further development were also identified. A questionnaire dealing with automatic coupling equipment and techniques was then prepared and transmitted to seven transit system operators. Through automatic entrainment and extrainment (or train separation) of individual vehicles, it is hoped that the operational efficiency of AGT systems may be improved. The report concludes, in part, that due to the lack of information in the area of automatic vehicle longitudinal control, the formulation of appropriate concepts in this area will require more original and basic work. The report presents a number of preliminary conclusions.

The present report describes the strength studies made with the coupler body of the basic variant for the automatic coupler 1969e for wagons. The tests planned in accordance with the "Joint Test Programme for Strength Studies relating to the UIC/OSJD Automatic Couplers" were carried out and completed successfully. The coupler body of the basic variant of the automatic coupler 1969e for wagons fulfills the strength conditions laid down in UIC Leaflet 522 as well as the additional ones agreed upon by UIC and OSJD. The necessary reinforcements undertaken in connection with the mixed coupler in the area of the large claw do not affect the compatibility of the two UIC/OSJD coupler versions, nor do they mean a modification of the adaption principles agreed upon by the two organisations.

VEHICLE LONGITUDINAL CONTROL AND RELIABILITY PROJECT. VOLUME 5. VLCR ENTRAINMENT AND PLATOONING ANALYSIS AND DESIGN. PARTS A AND B

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Automated Guideway Transit Technology Program (AGTTP) is directed towards the development of critical technologies which provide the foundation for the successful deployment of Automated Guideway Transit (AGT) systems. The program is not directed towards development of complete deployable systems, but towards system elements which may be used in a variety of advanced urban transportation systems. As part of the AGTTP, a project was established to address two critical areas where technological improvements at the subsystem level can substantially improve the deployability of AGT systems: vehicle longitudinal control and reliability. One of the efforts discussed in this report deals with the longitudinal control aspects of automatic entrainment and platooning concepts. The project objectives were to: (1) develop functional and performance specifications for longitudinal control systems for AGT systems using automatic entrainment or platooning; (2) perform an analytical and experimental evaluation of an automatic coupling and decoupling system suitable for trained vehicle operation and failed vehicle pulling and pushing; (3) establish design concepts and specifications for automatic coupling systems which meet the requirements in a cost-effective manner; and (4) perform an analytical assessment of the platooning concept and establish platooned vehicle operation. Work in this report includes review of status of existing technology, specification of design goals and requirements, detailed mathematical modeling, analysis and simulation, development and specification of design concepts and their mechanization, and some experimental validation of the design. The latter will be reported in Volume 6 of the final report.
