DETERMINING PORT DEPTHS--A STATISTICAL APPROACH

A statistical approach to determine the operational water depth of a port, utilizing published nautical chart data, is proposed in this paper. The nautical chart depth is adjusted by a calculated amount, depending on a selected probability of occurrence, to reflect the uncertainties and inaccuracies of water depth measurement, tidal prediction, and siltation rate. The procedure uses variances developed to represent the statistical variation of these parameters.

DEFINITION OF THE SEA BED IN NAVIGATION ROUTES THROUGH MUD AREAS

Studies have shown that echo sounders allow only subjective decisions on the altitude of the sea bed in areas where multilayered static suspensions occur. Gamma-ray densimeters have been used to measure the three dimensional density structure of static suspensions in a navigable channel. This development has been accompanied by investigation of ship behaviour in dense media. On the basis of these studies a new concept has been devised to define the effective sea bed in soft mud areas. Order from NSFI No. 18455.

AUTOMATIC COMPUTATION OF THE INERTIAL FORCE OF A SHIP WITH OPTIMUM MOTION ON A LIMITED DEPTH

A basic scheme for computing the inertial force of a ship under conditions of nonsteady motion along a limited channel is discussed. The scheme supplements an automatic system for controlling the number of revolutions of the main engines depending on the channel depth, which was constructed earlier by the Institutes of Hydromechanics and Cybernetics AN UkrSSR. Formulas are derived for the inertial force acting on a ship with a sloping channel bottom and for the corresponding correction to the number of revolutions of the engine, from which the corrections for the torque on the propeller shaft and the engine power can be determined. The dynamic equation for the ship on a variable depth is solved, from which the relation between the optimum number of revolutions of the engine and the channel depth and bottom slope is found. The automatic control occurs in correspondence with this relation. Brief descriptions are given for reasonable means for measuring the channel depth and bottom slope with appropriate detectors and for a general schematic of an automatic engine operation control system.
