      <title>How truck drivers and transport companies co-shape career sustainability: A comparative case study in the Netherlands</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This study examines how truck drivers interpret and exercise agency regarding career sustainability, within an occupation marked by spatial constraints, limited upward mobility, and strong job autonomy. Using a comparative case study design, the authors analyzed seven cases in various transport companies, grounded in 31 interviews with truck drivers, their direct supervisors, HR managers, and directors. The aim was to understand how agency plays out across organizational and occupational social spaces, and how this agency shapes truck drivers’ career trajectories. Findings reveal an agency paradox: while drivers report a strong sense of agency—expressed through ownership and individuality in their job, this perceived agency is identity-driven and constrained by existing structural organizational boundaries. Supervisors and other managerial actors often expect drivers to demonstrate long-term, life course agency, yet rarely offer needed support or resources. As a result, career development of truck drivers remains limited, reinforcing a culture of “good enough” satisfaction and static occupational roles. Findings highlight the critical role of social context in shaping how agency is interpreted and enacted in transport companies. These insights call for interventions that foster actual rather than perceived agency, including clearer supervisory roles, attention to health-related job demands, and efforts to challenge occupational stigma, and that aim for fostering truck drivers’ career sustainability.]]></description>

      <title>Mariner Training: Maritime Administration Should Share More Information About Financial Aid and Careers</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The maritime industry relies on mariners to work on vessels carrying goods and passengers domestically and internationally. However, industry stakeholders have raised concerns about a mariner shortage. To work in the industry, mariners often take courses through a training institution. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the Departments of Education, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and Labor administer federal financial aid that students could use for mariner training. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 contains a provision for the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to review issues related to federal financial aid for mariner training. This report addresses: (1) use of aid available for mariner training through MARAD, Education, VA, and Labor; (2) challenges mariner training institutions face related to this aid and MARAD’s steps to address those challenges; and (3) MARAD’s communication about aid available for mariner training. GAO reviewed MARAD documents and analyzed data from federal agencies and selected training institutions on financial aid for mariner training for fiscal years 2024 and 2025. GAO interviewed officials from MARAD, Education, VA, Labor, U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), and four maritime unions. GAO also obtained information from a selection of mariner training institutions, including through a survey of 47 institutions in the Centers of Excellence program; 46 institutions responded.]]></description>

      <title>Empowering the Transportation Workforce Through Technology Transfer</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This project strengthens Mid-America Transportation Center's (MATC’s) research, workforce development, and technology transfer objectives by supporting undergraduate and graduate student participation in regional and national transportation conferences. Funding will enable students to present MATC-supported research, engage with professionals, and explore career pathways. The project will also partially support the Midwest Innovation & Development in Transportation Symposium (MIDTRANS) in Fall 2027, including a dedicated MATC research session. Additional activities include collaborative technology transfer and reporting efforts with principal investigators and Kansas DOT to advance the deployment of transportation safety innovations and efficiently track KU MATC key performance metrics required by USDOT.

      <title>Gender Imbalance in the Transport Sector – An International Review</title>

      <description><![CDATA[According to the International Labour Organization’s latest figures,  women make up just 16.8% of those working in transport globally. This makes it one of the worst-performing industries worldwide- both across the public and private sectors, from boardroom to engine room. Improving gender diversity in the transport sector workforce is essential to achieve its innovation, sustainability and financial goals, while tackling the current, and profound, skills shortage. This paper provides an insight into the challenges and opportunities women face when they choose to work in transport. It is grounded in a review of published literature and primary data collection among a sample of men and women working in the sector. The findings offer an overview of women’s global employment in transport, including all modes and sectors of transport. The study is presented as a toolkit highlighting the challenges women face when entering, working, and progressing in the transport sector, identifying five main areas or entry points where actions and measures could provide the most impact in accelerating gender balance and some 25 case studies. This paper presents the main findings from the study.]]></description>

      <title>Young People and Transport Jobs: Making Transport Careers More Attractive: Brussels, 15 October 2025: Conference Report</title>

      <description><![CDATA[On 15 October 2025, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) hosted the conference ‘Young people and transport jobs: making transport careers more attractive’ in Brussels. The event brought together 67 young people and 16 sector representatives from all modes of transport to explore career prospects and expectations for working in the sector, as well as successful practices to attract, support, and retain young talent in the evolving transport sector. Through plenary and interactive sessions covering six transport modes/areas – road, urban public transport, rail, maritime/ports, inland waterways, and air – participants identified challenges related to working in the transport sector. They also shared good practices from the industry and discussed potential new solutions. Examples included partnering with educational and vocational institutions to innovate in training pathways, improving social and traditional media outreach, and promoting safety, security and working conditions. Participants agreed that the goal was to raise public awareness of the sector’s crucial role for society and its evolving, future-ready nature. The conference concluded with a dialogue between young people and DG MOVE, exploring ideas on how to make transport careers more attractive and inclusive for young people.]]></description>

      <title>Transforming Transportation with an Innovative and Talented Workforce: A Transportation Careers Workshop</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The proposed event will be a two-day workshop in Durango, Colorado, at both Fort Lewis College and another community site or high school, featuring several key presentations and a panel discussion. The first day will consist of speakers and presentations. The second day will consist of interactive feedback at separate locations regarding the results of vocational assessment inventories. The target population of workshop participants will be high school and college students interested in learning more about careers in the transportation industry. Participants will complete surveys and career-planning instruments and receive detailed interpretations of their results to help them narrow their career choices. Representatives from trucking, transit, state DOTs, and the supply chain industry will be invited to participate as experts, delivering presentations that describe careers and opportunities in the transportation industry. In addition, there will be an interactive session to help participants prioritize their vocational interests and preferences. Lastly, a networking event with presenters will also be arranged.

In addition to providing career information on activities, salaries, and other employment and career opportunities in the transportation industry, the proposed workshop will also address two main needs regarding the recruitment of potential entrants to the transportation industry. First, identify a transportation career profile for prospective applicants to target highly congruent candidates for the industry. This profile will provide researchers with an opportunity to develop an interest and preference profile of prospective students whose interests are congruent with the industry. Identifying those persons who are likely to be congruent allows outreach efforts to be tailored and targeted, and limited funds and resources to be used more effectively. Second, a short, easy-to-use web page that could assist students in obtaining information about transportation careers in general, with a brief survey or questionnaire to help narrow down interests in transportation careers, which then directs users to more targeted information. This web page could then be made available to other UTC programs that conduct transportation and career outreach events. The web page will be used to tally hits, and requests for applications will help more accurately measure the impact of the workshop's outreach efforts. This outreach project will also incorporate the development and implementation of a prototype webpage to evaluate the workshop and serve other UTCs.]]></description>

      <title>Recruiting Minnesota's Next Generation of Public Works Engineers</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Local transportation agencies in Minnesota continue to face the challenge of hiring and retaining workers. Over the past two decades, the Minnesota Local Road Research Board (LRRB) has funded projects and developed a series of resources that promote the different types of career opportunities local agencies offer. These past efforts have been focused on entry-level engineers and technicians. Most recently, the LRRB audience voiced a priority to find candidates to fill rural county engineer positions. A career path to become a public works engineer may not be known to civil engineering students; thus, contributing to the shortage. Additionally, the county engineer position requires being registered as a Professional Engineer (PE). In Minnesota this requires four years of work experience and passing an exam.]]></description>

      <title>Workforce Development Academy for Youth</title>

      <description><![CDATA[To address the need for a diverse workforce in the 21st century and create an awareness of the career paths and opportunities that exist in the transportation industry, the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at the California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) has created the Workforce Development Academy for Youth (WDAY). The goal of this program is to build a pipeline of diverse, well-qualified young professionals for the transportation industry. The program works with high school students and teachers to offer academic courses, basic skills, workforce readiness training, internships, extracurricular activities, and career placements to prepare students and place them into the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) college track. The academy emphasizes transportation as a valuable, accessible industry and aims to increase the number of underrepresented minorities and women who directly enter the transportation workforce. It also aims to increase the number of young people who enter college to study engineering or technology and subsequently pursue careers in transportation- and infrastructure-related careers. The WDAY program included STEM instruction, leadership development activities, field trips, job skills building activities, hands-on engineering projects and research application, internships, and more to empower participants to build competencies critical to academic and professional success. The program was conducted as a full-year program with 25 student participants from 18 high schools. Student academic progress was carefully monitored throughout the duration of the program to assess the effectiveness of its various components, and further evaluation data was collected from both students and faculty in the form of surveys, written feedback, and observation notes. Overall, the evaluations were overwhelmingly positive. Many participants reported planning to continue their education in STEM disciplines or enter the transportation workforce directly, making WDAY an important steppingstone on their academic and professional journeys.]]></description>

      <title>Connecting with Community: Using Women’s History for Library Outreach [video]</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Kendra Stoll, a Senior Librarian with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), presented tips on developing library outreach at this Transportation Librarians Roundtable. Stoll shared background information about a Caltrans employee affinity group called WOMEN (Women’s Opportunity to Mentor, Empower, and Network). For Women’s History Month in March, Stoll developed a presentation that covered the history of women in Caltrans. Women were involved in important work of the department from the beginning of Caltrans. Stoll shares lessons learned during the process of delivering the presentation, the reaction from attendees, and the benefits of organizing a presentation for library outreach.]]></description>

      <title>Broadening Workforce Participation in Transportation: Challenges and Strategies</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This Broadening workforce participation in the transportation industry is incredibly challenging. State of practice research highlights the reasons why this lack of participation in the workforce occurs. Fortunately, there are also identified strategies for alleviating the workforce challenges. This report highlights measures that transportation organizations can take to combat some of the workforce challenges they are facing. When organizations are willing to have candid conversations and invest in meaningful policies, this can accelerate a shift in the trust and culture within an industry, making that industry more attractive to the talent pool that exists. Beyond the extensive literature review, this report describes the findings from an industry survey. The survey was distributed for a three-month data collection period, which concluded in July 2024, resulting in 996 usable survey responses. Additionally, the research team interviewed 15 transportation professionals in 2024 to gain deeper insights into the challenges and solutions to the workforce participation in the transportation industry.]]></description>

      <title>Trends affecting women’s contributions in transportation science. A brief bibliometric analysis</title>

      <description><![CDATA[When Haghani and Bliemer (2023) considered the oldest groups of co-cited articles in the transport research literature, not a single woman featured among the 12 authors that were identified! Based on this observation, this article analyses women’s contribution to transport science over the last fifty years. The aim is to identify women’s contribution over time, to ascertain whether this contribution has been limited to specific areas of research and to what extent women have contributed to emerging research topics. Ultimately, the authors would like to determine whether transport publication trend is gender specific. The authors will complete the data-based coming from Haghani and Bliemer (2023). Firstly, the results show a strong and persistent male domination over the last 50 years, for all the many bibliometric indicators (number of publications, articles with the highest coverage of the cluster, the most frequently cited references, etc.), although this situation has become less marked recently. Secondly, the results show that women who succeed in transportation tend to specialize in specific disciplines such as psychology, medicine, mathematics or engineering. Finally, the results indicate that, in academic publications, the field of transport does not appear to be at the forefront in terms of gender balance.]]></description>
