      <description><![CDATA[A comprehensive and standardized set of equations to calculate component unavailability and component failure intensity has been obtained in the case of the repair and inspection policies which are usually not in practice.  Some of the processes describing the component behavior can be classified under the heading of so-called "closed chain renewal processes" which are described in the paper.  In addition a general theory for the inspected components has been developed.]]></description>

      <title>RELIABILITY: THE NEW DIMENSION</title>

      <description><![CDATA[Electro-Motive locomotives presently incorporate the advantages of an established reliability program which untimately benefits the railroads in better locomotive service and the builder in reduced customer complaints and better product recognition.  The latest models are achieving good reliability records.  Mainline locomotives have a normal service life exceeding 15 years and thousands of units are still operated after 20 years, or longer.  The diesel engine normally operates 6 to 12 years before being rebuilt.  In freight service, locomotives average about 150,000 miles annually with some units running over 250,000 miles.]]></description>
