      <description><![CDATA[“The Future of Aviation” Insight Event, held March 22–23, 2022, at the Keck Center of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine in Washington, DC, brought together airport representatives, community planners, universities and research institutions, and others in the aviation industry to discuss the future of aviation across multiple perspectives. TRB's Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) organized the event as part of its series of convening activities titled “ACRP Insight Events.” ACRP Insight Events are forums that foster dialogue between professionals across sectors, institutions, and industries. ACRP Insight Events convene airport industry leaders and subject matter experts in various fields to encourage discussion and promote broader and deeper insight on topics of significance to airport operators. These in-depth, face-to-face gatherings are designed to promote communication and collaboration, foster innovation, and help identify areas of future interest and research, especially for topics of emerging importance. This proceedings document is a compilation of the presentations and a factual summary of the ensuing discussions at the event. The program agenda for the event is provided in Appendix A. More than 100 people registered for the event. Registrants’ professional affiliations included airports, airlines, academic institutions, consulting, and more. The full list of registrants is provided in Appendix B. This event focused on the topic of the future of aviation. As the industry emerges from the greatest challenge to commercial aviation in recent memory and heads into recovery from the global pandemic, aviation professionals seek to understand how the aviation industry should prepare for the next set of challenges and disruptions.]]></description>

Specific topics presented the aviation industry with challenges that are mutually shared by all partners, including safety, public confidence, and financial sustainability. Other topics included gaps in the industry and public response to date and how the industry may address them, as well as operational mitigation strategies to enable recovery in the post-lockdown environment.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Nearly 500 transportation asset management practitioners came together in San Diego, California, for the 12th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management (TAM) in July 2018. The conference was sponsored by Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Transportation Asset Management and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).  The conference program was organized around the following five tracks:  Analyzing and Optimizing Investment Options; Data Systems to Improve Decisions; Implementation; Organization and Workforce; and Transportation Asset Management plans (TAMPs)—Setting the Course for Compliance and Beyond.  In addition to the five technical tracks, two cross-cutting tracks on transit and risk and resilience were established to help ensure that each technical track included material relevant to these two cross-cutting topics.       <title>Economic and Social Sustainability at Airports</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This conference was organized by the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) as part of its series of Insight Events. The impetus for this topic was the acknowledgment that airports understand and are actively working toward solutions focused on the environmental sphere of sustainability, but can benefit from enhanced support in understanding and overcoming challenges related to the economic and social sides of sustainability.  The agenda led off with two plenary sessions, including both a presentation and a discussion among panel members, which focused on social and then economic sustainability. The remainder of the event included two keynote addresses (one focused on the social aspect and one on economics), an open mic for participants to share successes and challenges, and interactive breakout sessions that allowed participants to delve deeper into more specific subtopics within social and economic sustainability, as well as the interaction between the two areas.]]></description>

      <title>Challenges to Implementing Successful Land Use Strategies at Airports</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This conference was organized by the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB’s) Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) as part of its series of convening activities, “ACRP Insight Events.” This event focused on the topic of land use planning around airports, which is typically done by local governments, with the nearby municipalities often having no connection to the airport’s management. However, because development of nearby entities may affect an airport and, conversely, an airport’s development may impact other nearby entities, both airport operators and local jurisdictions have much to gain from collaboration with each other. This conference sought to bring together airport planners with a direct connection to airport management and community planners to discuss land use planning around airports.  The event led off with two plenary sessions, each one including both a presentation and a discussion participated in by session panelists and audience members. The first plenary session focused on the airport planning context and the second plenary session focused on the planning jurisdiction context. The remainder of the event included three keynote speakers and breakout sessions in which participants worked together to develop a strategy to address the land use challenges of a fictional airport and jurisdiction.]]></description>

      <title>Socioeconomic Impacts of Automated and Connected Vehicle: Summary of the Sixth EU–U.S. Transportation Research Symposium</title>

      <description><![CDATA[This document summarizes the proceedings of Socioeconomic Impacts of Automated and Connected Vehicles, a symposium held June 26–27, 2018, in Brussels, Belgium.  Hosted by the European Commission and the Transportation Research Board (TRB), it was the sixth annual symposium sponsored by the European Commission and the United States.  The invitation-only symposium brought together high-level experts to share their views on the socioeconomic impacts of connected and automated vehicles and shared mobility (CAVSM). With the aim of fostering trans-Atlantic collaboration in research and deployment, symposium participants discussed challenges and opportunities arising from the diffusion of CAVSM and innovative approaches to mitigate any negative socioeconomic impacts.  A white paper was commissioned and four exploratory topic papers were developed.  The exploratory topic papers address how CAVSM affects people in the freight sector and its impact on the places where people live, work, and play; on travel behavior; and on the role and attitude of stakeholders involved.  The papers helped frame the discussions in the breakout sessions, which focused on formulating problem statements and subsequently identifying research topics appropriate for EU-U.S. collaboration.  The white paper was presented in the opening session.  Speakers discussed equity issues arising from CAVSM and developing fair transportation systems in the automated and connected era.  The participants then discussed challenges, opportunities, and areas of potential research that were presented by the planning committee members in the closing plenary session, along with targeted comments and testimonies from participating experts. Concluding comments were also offered by European Commission and TRB representatives.  This report features a compilation of the presentations and a factual summary of the ensuing discussions at the event, followed by EU-U.S. potential research topics on the socioeconomic impacts of CAVSM.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[In June 2018, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) hosted the conference Transforming the Marine Transportation System through Multimodal Freight Analytics at the National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, D.C. This meeting was the fifth in a series of Biennial Marine Transportation System Research and Development conferences organized by the TRB and cosponsored by the Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS).  Researchers, practitioners, and academicians gathered to explore innovative science and technology concepts for optimizing system performance through better freight flow forecasting.  This event provided an opportunity to share ideas and needs about multimodal freight analytics and to explore opportunities to harness robust, integrated, high-fidelity multimodal freight transportation data and analytics, offering an interactive format to engage in productive dialogue. The conference brought together those who generate new concepts and address transportation problems and opportunities and those who own and manage transportation systems. The conference considered potential research to address issues associated with transforming MTS. In addition to keynote speakers, the conference included plenary sessions focused on framing the issues related to multimodal freight operations, planning, and policy; presenting the challenges associated with the corresponding analytics; and making a case for its value to tactical and strategic planning. Participants had the opportunity to hear about and discuss issues and areas related to data analytics and decisions support in three concurrent breakout sessions and to interact with individuals providing active demonstrations. Speakers in the closing plenary session highlighted the topics and research ideas discussed during the conference. These proceedings consist of summaries of the introductory, plenary, breakout, and closing sessions as well as overviews of the keynote presentations. Abstracts from the student honor presentations and the active demonstrations are also provided.]]></description>

      <title>Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety: Summary of the 10th University Transportation Centers Spotlight Conference</title>

      <description><![CDATA[In December 2016, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) hosted a conference entitled Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety in Washington, D.C. This meeting was the 10th in a series of Spotlight Conferences funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, University Transportation Centers (UTC) Program. The conference attracted approximately 150 participants. Agency personnel  responsible for pedestrian, bicycle programs, and roadway safety joined faculty, researchers, and students from UTCs and other universities to explore issues and opportunities associated with pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Representatives from consulting firms, interest groups, and other organizations also participated in the conference. The conference, which was characterized by broad and active participation and discussion, considered potential research to address issues associated with pedestrian and bicyclist safety. The conference included plenary sessions focused on the role of policy and guidance, emerging and future technologies, behavior change, and equity. Conference participants also had the opportunity to interact with poster authors and to discuss issues and areas for further research in six concurrent breakout sessions.  The breakout sessions were focused on children, infrastructure, data, and safety analysis.  Speakers in the closing plenary session highlighted the topics and research needs discussed in the breakout groups. These proceedings consist of presentation summaries from the plenary sessions and the six concurrent breakout sessions. A list of the posters is also provided.]]></description>

      <title>Transportation Asset Management: Summary of the 11th National Conference</title>

      <description><![CDATA[The 11th National Conference on Transportation Asset Management was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 10–12, 2016. Organized by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the conference was supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Federal Transit Administration, and the Transportation Asset Management Pooled Fund project. It was hosted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (DOT).  The conference featured opening and closing sessions, 30 breakout sessions in five functional and two cross-cutting virtual tracks, a poster session, and four workshops. A peer exchange on implementing transportation asset management was also held in conjunction with the conference.  Speakers at the conference highlighted the advancements and improvements being made in transportation asset management programs at the state, regional, metropolitan, and local levels. Information on the innovative approaches being used by transit and other modes was interwoven throughout the conference. These approaches are addressing emerging issues, local needs, and federal requirements to ensure the best use of limited resources for transportation and transit investment decisions. Asset management programs are addressing climate change and extreme weather events, engaging diverse stakeholders in ongoing conversations, and using more robust and timely data. Programs are expanding to include risk assessments, vulnerability evaluations, and return on investment (ROI) analyses. Asset management is also being considered from a regional perspective in some areas. Although numerous advancements are occurring, speakers noted that many of the keys to successful asset management programs remain the same. These factors include top leadership support, establishing a strong basic foundation, involving personnel from throughout an agency, and transparency with policy makers and the public. Conference participants also discussed issues that would benefit from further research and technology transfer activities. This summary highlights the key elements from the conference. Comments from speakers in the opening session are presented first. The five track leaders’ comments on the discussion of the topics addressed in the breakout sessions are summarized in the closing session.]]></description>
