Legal Proceedings and the Expert Witness
This chapter will discuss how forensic science by nature requires not only conducting a test in a well-documented scientific manner, but also presents the results and the significance of such testing in legal or administrative proceedings. The chapter will discuss legal proceedings and the need for an expert witness, financial witness fees, law of evidence, burden of proof, and evidence. The chapter also details with the different types of evidence that may be utilized in legal proceedings as well as the admissibility of such evidence. The chapter also reviews and explains what one might expect if they are subpoenaed for testimony in a legal proceeding in terms of direct, examination, cross-examination and re-direct examination. The chapter gives an overall thorough presentation of what one might encounter in a legal proceeding.
