Performance Characteristics of the Ideal Asphalt Pavement

This paper describes how pavement performance is an important factor in calculating life cycle costs. Performance is a general term that defines or explains changes in the pavement surface condition over time. Pavements having exceptional performance exhibit minimal surface distress and have a smooth surface over the design period. Conversely, pavements exhibiting poor performance are those that exhibit excessive distress magnitudes and become rough at an accelerated rate long before the design period has been reached. The preceding two papers of this symposium focused on the materials selection and design procedures to minimize pavement distress throughout the design period. This paper presents the performance characteristics of an “ideal” asphalt pavement, and the last paper focuses on life cycle costs.
