Environmental Management Procedures in Airports

Procedimentos de Gestao Ambiental em Aeroportos

This paper will introduce the main environmental impacts from airport and aircraft operation as well as issues related to bird hazard and its interference on safety. The paper proposes a basic guidance for the implementation of environmental management procedures in airports, aiming to achieve not just full operational development and continuous improvement in the environmental performance of its activities, but also to minimize the impacts to levels acceptable by legislation. The paper presents a proposal aiming to make the numerous impacts compatible with environmental legislation. It establishes a continuous management program that sets responsibilities in the organizational structure of an airport’s administration and also evaluates, handles, improves, prevents and minimizes the environmental impacts resulting from the operational activity of the airports. The paper points out the importance of implementing an Environment Management System (EMS) in airports and defines the intervening variables, the requirements and the phases necessary to the application of the proposed management methodology. In addition, it also emphasizes the environmental aspects that require the development of specific management programs. Finally, the paper discusses the importance of implementing the proposed guidance in the Brazilian context and makes recommendations and considerations related to this issue.
