Airport Operation: Environmental Impacts on the Nearby Community
Operacao Aeroportuaria: Impactos Ambientais e a Populacao De Entorno
This article discusses how the airport is urban equipment whose operation helps to solve problems related to geographical integration and national security, especially in countries with continental dimensions like Brazil. However, the air transportation way, as all the others, can cause environmental negative impacts and could threaten the sustainable development of the region where the airport terminal is located. Among all these impacts generated by its operation, the most important ones, related to the nearby community, are the noise and the atmospheric pollution, and also the ones related to congestion near the terminal. The objective of this article is to present a group of guidelines to be used in an airport operation taking into account the principle of the sustainable development. In order to do this, the activities related to an airport operation which could cause negative impacts on the nearby community are presented and mitigating measures are proposed. Finally, the authors also suggest programs to monitor and to evaluate their effectiveness.
