Hot-Applied Polymer-Modified Bitumen Airdrome Sealant Formulation Design Based on Thin-Layer Chromatography
This paper describes how a study that was carried out at a number of airfields located on the former USSR territory has revealed a fact that to secure joint and crack sealing efficiency that the sealant to be applied in Russia and CIS countries should have high-level freeze resistance and increased relative elongation at negative temperatures. This phenomenon is resulting from a great annual temperature variation within the former USSR territory and also from particular airfield pavements design features. The sealing material properties could be improved by any major methods as mentioned: (1) application of expensive modifying additives such as different kinds of polymers, plasticizers, builders, their mixtures and others; and (2) bitumen component optimum mix design by using for example the chromatography method. The second method allowed for the achievement required characteristics for simplified airdrome sealant composition which permitted a considerable reduction of the product cost. The bitumen fractional analysis has been performed with iatroscan chromatography method by separating bitumen into four generic fractions: saturates, naphthene aromatics (or aromatics), polar saturates (or resins), and asphalthenes. In iatroscan chromatography, the separations are performed on very small samples of bitumen applied to a thin layer of finely divided silica sorbent that is fused to the surface of a quartz rod. In conclusion, the authors would like to state that the application of iatroscan chromatography allowed for obtaining airdrome sealants with required characteristics by 20-% cost decrease.
