CarSharing as Part of Transport Integration Concepts. Experience of the Bremen mobile.punkt

Most cities have reached a saturation point of cars in the central business district, where space is limited and valuable. This article describes how car sharing can offer an intelligent solution to urban transportation and parking problems. The experience of Bremen, Germany is highlighted, where car sharing is an important element of a sustainable development strategy. Since 1998, Bremen has made available the joint offer of a public transit season ticket and car sharing access. This has extended the service area of public transportation and reduces the need for private automobiles ownership. There is reserved parking for car sharing automobiles at nearby car sharing stations. These stations, called mobil.punkt stations, combine a car sharing station on public street space with an adjacent public transportation stop, bike racks and taxi stand. The mobil.punkt stations were developed as a result of two pilot projects in Bremen. After two years of operation, the pilot stations have proven to be successful in reducing parking traffic and supporting alternative transportation modes. Of private users, 30% have replaced a private car with car sharing. Among corporate users, 21% have replaced a company car with car sharing. The mobil.punkt station concept has been the recipient of several awards for innovation and environmental protection.
