Green-Schools Travel Programme

Green Schools is an international education, management and award program that promotes and acknowledges whole school action for the environment. This article describes an ongoing Green Schools pilot program in Ireland that focuses on promoting sustainable travel to school. Seventy percent of primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the Green Schools Program. The key measures that were developed and implemented to promote modal shift in schools include: raising awareness; developing educational and material resources; promoting walking, cycling and carpooling; and promoting public transportation provision. The Irish Green Schools travel program has been a success. To date, a 15% rise in walking levels and a 3% rise in cycling rates has been achieved in participating schools. Several schools have experienced walking levels of up to 70%. This success can be attributed to the commitment of teachers, parents and students. Results show that with the right level of support, schools can achieve significant modal shift in a relatively short period of time.
