Taxis: Bridging the Gap Between Individual and Collective Transport
Although taxis are a form of public transportation found throughout the world, their market share of urban trips is almost always very low. This article discusses how taxis can play a significantly more important role in urban transportation. Taxis are demand-responsive, travel as fast as private cars, and can serve the growing population of senior citizens who are reducing their driving. Collective taxis, in particular, can improve mobility and reduce congestion. Information and communication technology advances offer the potential to transform taxis services and improve the market potential for taxi operators. However, the strict regulations on access to the profession and to the market in most cities across the world are significant barriers to a larger role for taxis in urban mobility. A synergetic link created between new technologies and less strict regulation, along with better knowledge of taxi-related initiatives being implemented in other cities, could have a significant effect on the taxi service market.
