A survey of occupied wheelchairs and scooters conducted in 2005

This report presents the findings of a survey of occupied wheelchairs and electric scooters conducted in 2005 to determine their overall masses and dimensions. Data were collected at two specialist exhibitions and 12 site visits in the UK. A total of 1356 occupants and devices were included in the sample. Three categories of wheelchairs were surveyed: self-propelled, attendant-propelled, and electric. Children's wheelchairs were included. Nine dimensions were measured: height of device and occupant, length of device and occupant, wheelbase, height of armrest or device controls, distance between handles, angle of the front wheel to the front of the wheelchair and angle of the rear wheel to the rear of the wheelchair. Manual brakes, postural supports and mobility aids, luggage, handrails, bus backrest compliance and dynamic stability were also considered. In comparison to data collected in 1999, there had been increases in height, weight and length, but a decrease in width.
