World's First FOD Detection System at YVR
At Vancouver Airport (YVR), a new system is in place that enhances runway safety by establishing Foreign Object Detection (FOD) management. The Tarsier System (from QientiQ) has four radar sensors mounted to the tops of towers located on each runway and a parallel taxiway. Networked together, the radars are monitored from a single user display located in YVR's Operations Center. The operation of the Tarsier System, considered to be the first of its type in world, is discussed in detail and includes YVR's experiences integrating the radar system with the established airport systems. While results have been quite positive, the author notes that the integration is ongoing and considered to be a work in progress.
