ECOTRACK-UK: DECISION SUPPORT FOR TRACK RENEWAL STRATEGIES AND MAINTENANCE OPTIMISATION

To address the needs of the UK rail industry, a decision support system has been developed to assist engineers in the practice of strategically planning track renewal and optimising the need for preventive maintenance. Previously at the Railway Engineering 2000 conference a paper was presented which focused on the development and trial of the system now referred to as ECOTRACK-UK. This paper describes the testing element of a support project for Railtrack plc. The project had five interrelated deliverables: to manage the implementation of ECOTRACK-UK into all seven zones and major project teams; to provide technical support for decision making engineers; to carry out further tests to determine the performance of the developed knowledge base; to further develop the knowledge base following analysis of test results and improvements to data collection; and to provide support for the further development of the system in line with the current asset management strategy. This paper focuses on the tests carried out to determine the performance of both the developed knowledge base and the adopted shell system, ECOTRACK. Additionally it discusses the further developments required before the system can enter full operational use. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
