STRUCTURAL ACTION OF ARCH VIADUCTS
The authors developed the concept of active and passive arches and built a simple interactive computer program to allow users to apply the concept. As the number of arches assessed increases, it is becoming clear that the simple model is too conservative. The paper describes the Active/Passive model and the way it has been applied in a modern interactive computer program. The structural interactions that can be taken into account are discussed, and those that must be ignored highlighted. The ultimate limit of behaviour of multi span arches is assessed in light of the performance of three damaged bridges. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
