RECONSTRUCTION OF UNDERBRIDGE D136 BROMLEY BY BOW

London Underground's bridge D136 is located west of Bromley-by Bow Station 10 km east of the centre of London. The bridge carries two District Line tracks over Devons Road, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, a highly residential area. The original bridge was constructed in 1901 and attached to Railtrack's bridge and modified in the 1950s. The bridge had suffered damage due to vehicular collision and was under strength for carrying full RL loading. Due to weight restrictions imposed by the Transco, which owned a large diameter gas main beneath the road, two new bridges of smaller weights were designed to replace the old bridge. Low headroom and limited scope for raising the level of the bridge soffit required the installation of collision protection beams on the approaches to the bridge. The old bridge was detached from the Railtrack bridge and removed using an 'Econofreight' multi-wheeled vehicle and was replaced with the two new bridges using the same vehicle. The bridge was replaced during a 52-hour shut down of the London Underground's and Railtrack's Railway in November 2000, beginning Friday the 17th November and completed by Monday morning allowing rail traffic to recommence without any delay.
