VAULTED STRUCTURES CARRYING RAILWAY LOADS
Faced with the difficult problem of proving a vaulted structure carrying rail loads, the authors collaborated on producing a spreadsheet solution based on thrust line analysis. The resulting model considers the thrust in four skewed vault webs supported on a single pier. Live load is applied to one, while the others provide propping action to stabilise the pier and the loaded web. The paper describes the design construction and application of the spreadsheet model. It indicates some of the complexities and how they were dealt with and shows how the results were presented. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
