SURFACE TREATMENTS : WHEN SEALS MAKE SENSE

This article gives a detailed overview of asphalt chip seals and surface treatments. It first discusses the benefits of asphalt chip seals, describing how they can provide a skid-resistant surface, new life to weather surfaces, temporary surface cover, salvage old pavements, define shoulders, and provide rumble strips for safety. The article describes what constitutes a chip seal and how it is constructed, as well as the variety of surface treatments that are available and their applications. Three types of liquid asphalt that are used in conventional surface treatments include asphalt cement, cutback asphalt, and emulsified asphalt. While chip seals are most commonly used on low volume roads, they can be used on high volume highways if used in conjunction with high-performance binders which include both mechanical and chemical bonds. The article concludes with a glossary that identifies twenty two basic terms of of pavement coating technology.
