TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TRANSGUIDE - TECHNOLOGY IN MOTION, SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS: ECONOMIC GROWTH THROUGH GPS

The Intelligent Transportation System - TransGuide is designed to provide transportation and emergency response officials the opportunity within two minutes, to identify and visually view freeway accidents or congestion within a region of over 45,000 square miles. At the TransGuide Operations Center, located in San Antonio, enforcement officials will determine and immediately dispatch emergency medical service and required accident scene clearing services. Once the freeway emergency has been identified within the 45,000 square mile region, appropriate personnel must be dispatched. Dispatching the appropriate and closest emergency vehicles within a region of this size, requires an automated vehicle location system. The management of thousands of vehicles from approximately 100 different agencies will require specialized tools. At TransGuide, the GPS information of all the different emergency vehicles will be graphically layered on different user levels. This will allow operators to display multiple combinations of multiple agencies depending on the emergency or disaster. This will allow the management of the information into an efficient user interface. The information transmitted to TransGuide will consist of three dimensional location (third dimension is important for medical airlift transport status), vehicle identification, vehicle status and collision notification (future).
