FOUNDATION PROBLEMS IN EUROPE: THEIR COST, CAUSES, HANDLING AND AVOIDANCE
This paper presents the results of two questionnaire surveys, carried out by the members of Working Group C, concerned with case histories of COST Action C7, the European Commission's Committee on Soil-Structure Interaction in Urban Civil Engineering. The purpose of one survey was to investigate the cost in Europe arising from damage to structures due to foundation problems, to determine the main reasons for such problems, and to identify what actions would minimise the cost of such problems and help avoid their occurrence. The purpose of the other survey was to investigate the practice in Europe for handling cases of structural damage due to geotechnical problems. From the results of these surveys, it is demonstrated that the cost of damage due to foundation problems generally exceeds the costs due to other types of problems and that the practice on the handling of cases of damage differs between the various countries in Europe. Recommendations are made for avoiding damage to structures due to geotechnical problems.
