A REVIEW OF THE EVIDENCE FOR INDUCED TRAVEL AND CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY IN THE US AND THE UK
Recent research reveals that new transportation capacity induces increased travel due to short run effects and long run changes in land use development patterns. This article summarizes the basic theoretical background of induced demand and relates this to recent empirical research. Changes in transportation and environmental policy in both the US and the UK are examined. Increased knowledge of how infrastructure affects travel behavior and land use patterns may lead to improved policies and project selection that will allow greater choices for individuals while minimizing environmental impacts.
