INTELLIGENT EMERGENCY RESPONSE SYSTEMS. IN: THE GEOGRAPHICAL DIMENSIONS OF TERRORISM
Tall structures in urban areas pose some major challenges for emergency response largely due to their location and inaccessibility for some types of emergency equipment. This paper focuses on the use of geographic information system (GIS) technology and methodology to facilitate rapid emergency response to terrorist attacks on multi-level structures in urban areas, targets of choice for recent terrorist attacks in the U.S. It draws upon several research areas in geography's analytical tradition and recent developments in GIS that can be used in responding to disaster situations. Lastly, the paper explores the development of real-time GIS-based Intelligent Emergency Response Systems as a contribution to reducing human vulnerability to disasters.
