REDUCING ROAD CONGESTION: A REALITY CHECK. A COMMENT
A comment on a paper with the aforementioned title by P. Stopher, published in this issue of this journal, is presented. The author's main concern with the paper relates to Stopher's enthusiasm for telecommuting as an approach to reduce traffic congestion. Evidence is presented which suggests that telecommuting may have possible positive benefits in general, but is likely to reduce only a fraction of 1% of household travel in the U.S., even in the long-term.
