TRAINING. IN: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF AVIATION PSYCHOLOGY
Training is particularly important in aviation industry where accidents can involve loss of life as well as enormous financial costs. This paper has addressed three stages of training development as suggested by some of the ISD (Instructional System Development) models that have been discussed. The first critical stage involves identifying training needs and analyzing tasks that need to be trained; the second stage involves designing the training program by using as many psychological theories and principles as possible to promote motivation, learning, and transfer. Central to much aviation training is the development and use of simulations in which part-skills can be practiced safely and with considerable cost savings. The third and final stage of training development involves evaluation, which assesses whether a training program achieves its objectives, and if it does not, necessary adjustments can be made to either the content or design of the training.
