THE NEW U.S.A. GRAVEL ROAD MANUAL

In the U.S. alone, there are over 1.6 million miles of unpaved roads. Most of these are classified as gravel roads, which implies that the top surface is made of gravel of varying thicknesses. The road network of several nations worldwide is predominantly gravel surfaced, and is vital to the economies of these nations. Because of the importance of gravel roads, they must be properly maintained to ensure their sustainable contribution to a nation's economy. This paper describes the new U.S. Manual for Gravel Roads that was developed to address all aspects of gravel road maintenance, rehabilitation, and design. The Manual is simply written and easy to understand for both technically-oriented and lay audiences. The design section includes the AASHTO method of determining the proper thickness of the gravel surface layer.
