ROAD TRANSPORT SECTOR REFORMS: THE TANZANIAN EXPERIENCE
This paper reviews the reforms that have taken place in Tanzania within the road transport sub-sector in the past 30 years and studies their impact on road maintenance and management. The role of road transport operations and their contribution to economic growth and development in Tanzania are also reviewed. It is underscored that transport interventions have an important role as a direct tool for development in other sectors of the economy. It is determined that road transport assures adequate access to basic social services and markets, as well as provision of modest, low-cost transportation that can be of great value to the society. Recommendations of further reforms that should be given priority to reach desired goals are also provided.
